Today we wanted to share why we chose to support the Samaritan Outreach Center through this fundraiser.
Harm reduction is about reducing the risks associated with drug use, but it's also about addressing the conditions that make people more vulnerable in the first place. Poverty, housing instability, unemployment, trauma, and lack of access to basic necessities all play a role. When people have food, shelter, hygiene products, and support, they're in a better position to regain stability and make healthier choices.
Here in Howell County, hundreds of people experience housing insecurity each year, and organizations like the Samaritan Outreach Center help fill a critical need.
The Samaritan Outreach Center provides emergency shelter, meals, clothing, and resources for individuals and families who have fallen on hard times. The shelter can house approximately 34–40 residents, including men, women, and children. To stay there, residents must pass a background check, cannot be a registered s*x offender, and must be drug-free upon arrival.
After speaking with the center, we learned their greatest current needs are:
🧻 Toilet paper
🪥 Hygiene products
🧽 Cleaning supplies
They also gladly accept donations of food and clothing during office hours, Monday–Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Even if someone doesn't need shelter, they can still receive:
🍽️ Lunch at 12:00 PM and dinner at 5:00 PM every day.
👕 Clothing and shoes are available to the public Monday–Friday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
If you can't make it to our fundraiser, but would still like to help support the cause, you can donate to our cash app $AftertheRainHR
Every dollar and every donated item helps ensure our neighbors have access to basic necessities and support when they need it most.
Thank you to everyone that has been a part of making this event possible and for helping us make a difference in our community. 🫶
