Today, let's all celebrate World Ocean Day even more than we normally do! The ocean is our life-support and full of so many amazing creatures, and we should all do our part to help keep it healthy 💙🌍.

It has been just over a month since we deployed our 15th experiment, and look at how far this eco-friendly drift card traveled.

This drift card was decorated by a Palm Beach Day Academy student, deployed by Alex, our Spring Intern, from the West Palm Beach Public Docks and then traveled 13 miles north where it ended up being found on Juno Beach two weeks later.

Thank you to the Great Charity Challenge for supporting this experiment.

Meet Dr. Teresa Greely 👋

We are counting down the days until we are in St. Petersburg next week with Teresa and the team for another USF Oceanography Camp Especially for Girls! and the crew are not strangers to this awesome camp and love their mission of inspiring teens entering high school to consider career opportunities in the sciences.

Welcome to ANGARI, Sara!

Sara is currently a remote intern with us and has always been drawn to the ocean and sharks. She is studying for her Masters in Marine Science from Nova Southeastern University and working on a thesis project using environmental DNA as a tool to detect sharks and rays off the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico. During her remote internship at ANGARI, Sara will be helping with the development of our social media campaign and educational content that supports our program.

We wrapped up our spring semester with an awesome :Sharks expedition with students and educators from Palm Beach Day Academy! Participants worked side by side scientists from FIU College of Arts, Sciences & Education to conduct shark research offshore in Palm Beach County. Students worked with the science team to collect data from four different sharks on this expedition! To learn more, visit the expedition webpage: https://hubs.ly/Q04jCD_20

All research was conducted under Florida permits held by FIU scientists.

A quarter of our eco-friendly drift cards have been found and reported to us, which is awesome!

This drift card went on a journey, check it out! After being decorated by students from Independence Middle School - SciQuest Academy, it was then deployed from Manatee Lagoon by their staff, Friends of Manatee Lagoon and members of the public. After traveling out of the Lake Worth Inlet and south, it washed up on the beach in Lantana where a member of the public found and reported it.

After a long (and occasionally wet) transit from North Palm Beach to the NOAA Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, we are happy to be seeing sunshine and all tucked in at Rodriguez Key for the night!

Our crew is looking forward to spending the rest of the week supporting Clemson University scientists in their field research, and sharing more about this expedition with all of you in the not too distant future... Stay tuned!

Did you know that we have two studies? We run one in the Lake Worth Lagoon and one in the Indian River Lagoon, and these two studies have definitely overlapped with this fun report! This eco-friendly drift card was released into the Indian River Lagoon, and after deployment it made its journey out of the inlet and traveled 30 miles south where it was then found washed ashore at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, a common location for the Lake Worth Lagoon drift cards to be found!

There are still plenty of drift cards out there from both our experiments so keep those eyes open!

Thank you to the Great Charity Challenge for supporting this Lagoon Drift experiment.
