🎓✨ Celebrating Dr. Shilah James, Ed.D.!
Change My Community is honored to celebrate Dr. Shilah James, who today earned her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education and Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
From England to the United States, Dr. James has built her American story with grace and grit: raising a family, serving as First Lady of New Life Worldwide Apostolic Church, encouraging everyone she meets, and advocating tirelessly for immigrant women and children. She is living proof that immigrants do not just arrive in this country; they elevate every community they enter.
CMC has been blessed to know her not only as a scholar, but as a partner in the work. She served as guest speaker at our Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, and through her leadership, New Life Worldwide Apostolic Church and Change My Community joined hands in partnership for our Back to School initiative, standing together with the immigrant families we exist to serve.
Dr. James, thank you for being a beacon of faith, leadership, and generosity. Today, we celebrate you. 🎓💛

Behind every box of food is a family doing their best to make ends meet.

As Guerly Adonis, President & CEO of Change My Community, shared, “Through our partnership with Farm Share, Change My Community distributes food every single month to approximately 250 families in our community — working parents, seniors, immigrants, and children who would otherwise go without. Over the course of a year, we serve more than 3,000 families who depend on this consistent, dignified source of nutrition simply to make ends meet."

Day 2 of the Florida People's Hearing at Florida Live 2026 in Miami, FL, Change My Community actively participated in working sessions, forged strategic alliances, and engaged with advocates from across the state. Our President delivered testimony in front of a room full of organizations and advocates, highlighting the plight of Haitian immigrant detainees and the precarious status of 348,000 Haitians facing potential loss of legal status. This appearance facilitated new opportunities and catalyzed the formation of coalitions. Proud to share the room with fellow leaders of the Haitian community, including Anne Pierre of Florida Rising, Kisha Dominique, and Margareth Nabosse of Proud of Serving. Haiti was well represented.

Expanding access to justice in Palm Beach County is a mission close to our hearts, and we are proud to stand alongside organizations doing this work every day. It is imperative that we take action to safeguard our women. The demise of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, a pioneering figure as the first Black and Haitian American woman to hold a seat on the Coral Springs City Commission, has left an indelible mark. Her legacy as a trailblazer and dedicated public servant has been cut short. Her untimely death is not an isolated incident, but rather a stark reminder of a pervasive issue that has been obscured from public discourse for far too long, where victims are often silenced by shame and cultural norms frequently prioritize protecting perpetrators over victims.

To those women who fear for their safety, know that you are not alone, you possess rights, and there are options available to you. We stand in
solidarity with you. To our community, we emphasize that silence is not a demonstration of loyalty, but rather complicity.

Change My Community has been accepted to present at The Migration Conference 2026 in Bratislava, Slovakia! 🇸🇰
CMC’s work with Haitian Creole-speaking and Francophone immigrant families in South Florida will be represented on the international stage this September.
Our abstract, “From the Ground Up: A Grassroots Nonprofit Model for Holistic Immigration Legal Services and Food Security in Underserved Haitian Creole-Speaking and Francophone Communities in the United States,” was accepted for oral presentation and will be published in the Book of Abstracts by Transnational Press London.
This is for every family we have served. Every volunteer who showed up. Every donor who believed in our mission. 🙏
