Doctors gave their unborn baby no chance of survival.
Daniel and Michelle Schachle had already learned that their son, Mikey, had Down syndrome. They welcomed him with love.
Then came another devastating diagnosis: fetal hydrops, a severe accumulation of fluid that doctors considered fatal in his case. They were told their baby would not survive.
The family began asking for the intercession of Father Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. During a pilgrimage to Fatima, Daniel promised that if his son lived, he would name him Michael.
When the family returned for another ultrasound, doctors discovered something they could not explain:
The fetal hydrops had completely disappeared.
Mikey was born on May 15, 2015, with Down syndrome—and without the condition that was expected to take his life.
After a detailed investigation, the Catholic Church recognized the healing as a miracle attributed to Father McGivney’s intercession. It opened the way for his beatification in 2020.
Today, August 13, the Church celebrates his feast.
