Important Update from Delta Veterans

To our incredible community, supporters, and board members:

After deep reflection and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily pause the active operations of Delta Veterans due to personal reasons. This was not a decision we made lightly, as we are immensely proud of the work we’ve done together and the lives we’ve impacted.

We want to express our deepest gratitude for the unwavering support you've shown us throughout our journey. Your belief in our mission has fueled every initiative and outreach effort, and for that, we are truly thankful.

Though we are stepping back from our frontline work for now, our website will continue to be available for you to find, and connect with, the resources you need.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated and let you know as soon as we are ready to resume our full operations. Until then, thank you for standing with us.

With much appreciation,

Anthony Corkern
President
Delta Veterans

The USO was founded on February 4, 1941 by Mary Ingraham in response to a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide morale and recreation services to U.S. uniformed military personnel. Roosevelt was elected as its honorary chairman. This request brought together six civilian organizations: the Salvation Army, YMCA, Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), National Catholic Community Service, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board. They were brought together under one umbrella to support U.S. troops, as opposed to operating independently as some had done during the First World War. Roosevelt said he wanted "these private organizations to handle the on-leave recreation of the men in the armed forces."

Congress established the Army Nurse Corps in 1901. Nurses were the first women in the Army and U.S. Army General Hospital at the Presidio was the first Army hospital to employ them. By 1902, 41 nurses were part of the hospital staff. During World War II, women signed up with the Army and Navy Nurse Corps for service in the Philippine Islands. Of the 99 nurses known to have served in or at Bataan, 22 escaped before the final fall of the Philippine Islands in 1942. The remaining 77, the largest group of women Prisoners of War in American history, were repatriated in 1945. To the men with which they served, and to whom they ministered, they became known as the “Angels of Bataan.” The nurses were freed on February 21, 1945 after three years of imprisonment. On their way home, the released nurses were honored at Letterman Hospital.

National Freedom Day is an annual event celebrated on February 1st. It serves as a reminder of the fundamental principles of freedom, liberty, and human rights that are the foundation of the United States. This day is an occasion to reflect on the progress made in achieving civil rights and to reaffirm the commitment to eliminating all forms of oppression and discrimination. National Freedom Day was established in 1948 to commemorate the historic signing of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by President Abraham Lincoln on February 1, 1865. This amendment outlawed slavery, representing a major step toward achieving equality for all Americans.

The Vietnam War ceasefire went into effect on January 28, 1973, after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords on January 27, 1973. The accords were signed by the United States, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Provisional Revolutionary Government (Viet Cong).

The ceasefire was part of the agreement, which also included:
A 60-day period for the withdrawal of all foreign troops, including American troops
The return of U.S. military and civilian personnel held prisoner by Communist forces

However, only the United States honored the ceasefire, and fighting resumed before the last American combat troops left the country on March 29, 1973.

Operation Desert Storm began on January 17, 1991, with a massive air campaign led by the United States against Iraq. The conflict, also known as the Gulf War, was a response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990.

The Gulf War was a two-phase military operation:

Operation Desert Shield: The military buildup that took place from August 1990 to January 1991.

Operation Desert Storm: The combat phase that began on January 17, 1991, and ended on February 28, 1991.

The combat phase of Operation Desert Storm included:

Aerial bombardment
The initial phase of the conflict, which began on January 17, 1991, and lasted for five weeks. The U.S. and its allies destroyed Iraq's air defenses, communications networks, government buildings, weapons plants, oil refineries, and bridges and roads.

Ground assault
Launched on February 24, 1991, the ground assault was known as the "100-hour ground war". U.S. and Arab forces retook Kuwait City within three days.
The Gulf War was the first major international crisis of the post-Cold War era. The U.S.-led response to the invasion set important precedents for the use of military force in the decades that followed.
