Hi everyone!

A lot of you have been asking about ways to support our mission, and I’m excited to share a couple options!

As we continue working toward a permanent and secure future for these rescue animals, we’re facing legal expenses along with several important improvements that need to be completed before winter. Especially for Anita and Uni (I think some of you can imagine the palace Anita is demanding 😂). Every dollar raised helps us provide a lifelong, loving home for the animals already in our care and will set us up to rescue animals for years to come!

One of our incredibly generous supporters had these beautiful limited-edition pins made for us (about 90 left)! I’m offering them for $25 each, and 100% of the proceeds will go directly toward securing a safe forever home for our rescue animals: Anita, Uni, Butch, Cassidy, and Scrooge.

We’ve also added T-shirts to our website! You can find them here (along with a few other items: hat, hoodie, etc. sold via Printful):

https://www.mousammisfits.com/merch

Because the pins are a limited-edition fundraiser, they aren’t listed on the website. If you’d like one, simply send a one-time donation through Zeffy (link below) and then message me your mailing address (note that you can set Zeffy’s fee to $0 which does not affect us). I’ll get your pin shipped out by next week! 🩵 each order will also come with a free sticker 🙂

As always, thank you for your support. None of this would be possible without this amazing community. Together, we’re not only saving animals today, we’re helping create a safe, happy, and loving future for countless rescue animals to come.

Hi everyone, we are just now starting to accept scheduled visitors. We had a visitor come this morning and it went well. It’s not something we will be offering a ton because honestly sometimes we don’t have the time. But I really want people to feel like they are part of a community with Mousam Misfits! My question to you is, do you think it’s reasonable to ask for a small donation for a visit? A small donation to the rescue animals for even fresh veggies if money is tight? Just curious what your thoughts are around that. I would also like to create an educational pamphlet that people can take with them with some stickers. Brainstorm with me if you’d like 🙂🩵

Adding a photo of Butch because sometimes it’s just nice to look at a pretty face 😆🩷

I never officially introduced Uni because he was rescued right as the complications with the town were ramping up.
Jess and I picked him up in Waterboro from a home where he had been living alone for months. His previous owners had other goats with him, but they had unexpectedly passed away. As a result, Uni had been by himself for quite some time.

Goats are herd animals, and being alone can be deeply distressing for them. That’s why, when we learned about his situation, there was no question, we had to go get him!

Before bringing him to the farm, my vet examined him and ran bloodwork to make sure he didn’t have any contagious diseases that could put the other animals at risk. Once he was cleared, he was ready to join the misfits 🩷

When it was time to leave, we discovered our horse trailer had a flat tire. Jess and I have very similar personalities and when we are determined, nothing gets in our way. So we cleaned out the back of Jess’s truck and brought him home with us! He was as well-behaved as could be the entire ride.

Normally, when I bring goats from other farms for Scapegoats, there’s always an adjustment period. Relocating is stressful, and sometimes goats can even become sick from the stress. But I’ve never seen a goat as happy as Uni was to arrive here and suddenly have a whole bunch of new friends.

He adjusted immediately. He was relaxed, playful, and genuinely content from day one.

Uni and Anita quickly became best friends and sleep together every night. He plays with some of the other goats too, but he always wants to get back to Anita. Watching their friendship develop has been one of the sweetest things.

He’s the happiest, gentlest boy and has been the perfect addition to Mousam Misfits 🩷🐐

His name is Uni because he only has one horn. And since Anita is a princess, every princess needs her unicorn. 🩷

OK, so here’s the deal.

We had a very productive and respectful meeting with the town yesterday. They showed a genuine amount of concern, understanding, and willingness to make this work. They also took some accountability for the actions that led us to this point and were apologetic for what we’ve been through over the last several weeks. That was extremely appreciated. The code officer who started this mess has resigned.

On our end, we expressed that we want to cooperate with the town. We want to be in compliance, and we want to find a solution that works for everyone.
Nothing is finalized yet, but the future of Scapegoats appears to be stable. We should know more within the next couple of weeks.

The sanctuary is a bit different because there are zoning issues surrounding it. I was not given the right information from the same code officer when I started inquiring about starting the sanctuary in 2024. So, for now, Mousam Misfits Sanctuary will only be Mousam Misfits, if you catch my drift. When we hopefully get the zoning changed, we will be Mousam Misfits Sanctuary again.

Other than the language, nothing else changes. We will continue caring for our five rescue animals and keeping you updated on their health and well-being. However, because of the zoning complications, we will not be taking in any additional rescue animals until this issue is resolved.

We will be submitting a request to change the zoning(with my lawyer), and hopefully we will be included in the November Town Meeting. If that happens, there will be a VOTE that allows local residents to decide whether they want our sanctuary to remain here. THAT is when I need you all to show up for us so we can continue our mission, for years to come 🩷

As information becomes finalized, I will continue to share updates. I’ll share meeting dates and details, and hopefully gather as much community support as possible so we can continue rescuing animals.

In the meantime, I’m going to put a pause on discussing the situation with the town. You guys can pause on contacting them also 🙏 I think they got the message 😂🩷

Unless there is a significant update that requires your help (or they pull another 180), my focus will be on the animals. I’ll continue posting videos and updates about Anita, Butch, Cassidy, Uni, and Scrooge so you can follow their journeys and see how they’re doing.

As we continue this process, it will continue to cost money. There are ongoing legal fees associated with the rezoning effort, and there are improvements we want to make here on the farm specifically for our five beloved animals (and future animals). Your donations are still greatly appreciated and very much needed. You can donate here:

https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/please-help-contribute-to-lawyer-fees-to-save-our-animals

Our long-term goal remains the same: obtain the proper zoning for the sanctuary and continue rescuing animals for many years to come.

I apologize if this update feels a little confusing or lacks specific details. I’m trying to walk a careful line right now to protect and preserve what we’ve worked so hard to build.

Thank you for continuing to follow along. Please keep sharing your love for these animals and supporting them as we move forward together 🩷🩷🩷 what a trip this has been!!

Hey everyone, I need some time to decompress and figure out exactly what I wanna say next but for now, I’m just going to say that it went quite well. My animals are NOT being threatened right now. There are still some challenges to overcome, but it all seems promising. The Code office was much more reasonable, communicative and understanding than I was expecting.

I think you guys did this. It’s because of you that our animals get to stay home 🩷🩷🩷
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I may still need people to gather at a future public hearing, but I will tell you all about it soon 🩵🩵🩵

Since some people seem determined to tear others down, even when it comes to protecting vulnerable animals, I’m reposting a post that was pinned to the top of my page for months before the town situation took center stage.

I know there are a lot of new people here, and transparency is very important to me. Before accusing me of being dishonest, please just ask me a question. I will answer whatever you want to know.

I started the sanctuary only five months ago. There are currently five sanctuary animals in the sanctuary. However, I have operated Scapegoats since 2016 and have had approximately two dozen goats on my property for the past ten years. I was approved to have livestock on my property in 2016. Most of these goats are male goats that other farms didn’t want.

About a year and a half ago, I was told by the Code Officer that the sanctuary was acceptable as long as it was not categorized as a commercial operation. Since Scapegoats had never been categorized as commercial (according to the town- because I was not selling anything off my property), I proceeded with obtaining 501(c)(3) status for the sanctuary, and there was no objection at that time.

What I struggle to understand is why I have to justify the life of an animal. Whether an animal is part of Scapegoats or part of the sanctuary, I don’t believe one life is more valuable than the other.

The point remains the same.

Please do a little research before you jump to conclusions. I’ve been extremely open and transparent, and if you can’t see that, then you should move along.

I want to clearly restate something important as we continue building this community.

There are two separate entities here: Scapegoats, my for-profit landscaping business, and Mousam Misfits Sanctuary, our nonprofit sanctuary effort. They operate independently.

Donations made to Mousam Misfits Sanctuary go directly toward the care of sanctuary animals and sanctuary-related expenses. Scapegoats funds itself as its own business. Currently, the goats you see in photos or videos, are Scapegoats, not sanctuary animals.

This sanctuary is truly my heart and soul. Because I care so deeply about this mission, integrity and transparency matter tremendously to me. If anyone ever has thoughtful questions about how things are structured, I am always happy to answer them directly.

Thank you to everyone who supports us and believes in what we’re building.

This is a photo of the crew who are all helping this dream come to fruition. We would not be where we are without every one of us!

Good morning, everyone.
I was going to make a second post yesterday, but it ended up being a very emotional and internally conflicting day for me.

First, I want to let everyone know that there is a meeting scheduled for Friday at 11:00 AM at Town Hall with the Code Office. My lawyer and I will be meeting with Chris Osterrieder and Lee Feldman from the Code Office and the attorney they hired for this matter. I’m not sure who else, because as far as I know Brian Paul has retired. When I asked who would be in attendance, they did not respond, showing their continued lack of communication. At this point, I have no idea what their intentions are or what the outcome of that meeting will be.

Originally, I was planning to ask people to gather at Town Hall to show support. After giving it a lot of thought and talking with others, I’ve decided not to do that right now. Instead, I’m going to give the Code Office an opportunity to do the right thing and work toward a fair resolution. While their actions so far have given me little reason to be optimistic, I do believe it’s important go in with good faith and give them that chance.

If they continue to threaten my livelihood and the well-being of my animals, I will ask the community to come together and make our voices heard. But for now, I am choosing to approach Friday’s meeting with hope and an open mind.

Please keep us in your thoughts, send positive energy our way, and hope for a good outcome. I will update everyone as soon as I can after the meeting.

Thank you all so much for your support. It means more than you know 🩷🩷
