Suzanne Bonne, daughter of Arthur Bonne of Lakeview is an author. She came into the library and gave me a copy of her children's book, "Archie's Adventures Into Blundertown" which is dedicated to her truly amazing father that I had the pleasure of meeting twice. Thank you so much Suzanne! I hope you have many happy readers! The book is available through Amazon, Book Baby and at Barnes and Noble. Another famous and accomplished West Hempstead/Lakeview resident.

In 1976, members of the West Hempstead community had fun decorating their doors for the upcoming Bicentennial. Here are a few decorated doors around town for the 250th Anniversary. Feel free to send in your own photo.

This past Wednesday June 17th, 2026 the West Hempstead Historical Society celebrated its 43rd Anniversary at Reisterer's Bakery. It was a warm and happy meeting of individuals united in their mission, thankful for each other. The WHHS wishes the community a Happy Independence Day and 250th Anniversary of America. Meetings will begin again next September after the summer holiday.

The second display by the West Hempstead Historical Society regarding the 250th Anniversary of our country is located on the historic shelves by the self check machine at the Children's Room entrance of the West Hempstead Public Library. These shelves were donated by member Rich Erhlich. His parents were instrumental in the creation of the first West Hempstead Public Library and these shelves held some of the books original to the library. Right now on the shelves are a copy of "The Town of Hempstead Colonial Ball" program, a copy of the "Nassau Salutes the Bicentennial" insert from the Sunday News 1976 and photos of the 1976 West Hempstead Bicentennial Parade. Its fun to look at Woodfield Road and Hempstead Avenue 50 years ago! Come in and have a look.

Happy 250th Anniversary America! The West Hempstead Historical Society has created many ways for the public to learn about the history of the area of Hempstead during the Revolutionary War Era and the 200th Anniversary celebration which took place in Hempstead/West Hempstead in 1976. The main display is located next to the Young Adult room. Pamphlets available after 6/9/2026. The 1976 West Hempstead Display is located by the self check machine by the Children's Room.
