Matthew's Voice Project Supporting the individualized needs of
students experiencing homelessness in the Fargo, Moorhead, and West Fargo communities since 2011. Thank you!

Matthew’s Voice Project (MVP) is an effort to assist students in our public schools who are identified as experiencing homelessness. Much of MVP’s focus is on unaccompanied youth (no parents or guardians in their lives), providing them with the support and encouragement they need to complete high school. Over the past several years, MVP has worked
with an area photographer, stylists and retail
businesses to arrange for portraits for
graduating seniors who would otherwise
not have the opportunity. Our continued goal is to assist homeless students with more pressing day-to-day needs:
• Housing
• Quality shoes to last
• Clothing needs to include dress clothes for work, winter/snow gear, etc.
• Cell phones & pre-paid minutes
• Technology needs such as jump drives
to store homework to transfer between
computers
• YMCA memberships
• Gas cards & taxi fares for transportation
to their jobs

Monetary donations are made directly to Matthew's Voice Project a 501c3 organization, and dispersed to the local Homeless High School Liaisons to help take care of the needs of the students so they can succeed and graduate from school. Check out our Amazon Wishlist: https://a.co/6youdca

As a reminder, our recipients are hand-selected by our school social workers and specifically for students experiencing homelessness across our Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo, and Horace schools. This is a huge undertaking for them and, just like all of us, they do it for the kids. Their hand-selection means that students are connected with the appropriate local drive for their unique situation without doubling up.

This year's Drive will be held on Sunday, December 13th. Our lists will be available in the week leading up to Thanksgiving.

As a reminder - our recipients are hand-selected by our school social workers and specifically for students experiencing homelessness across our Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo, and Horace schools. This is a huge undertaking for them and, just like all of us, they do it for the kids. Their hand-selection means that students are connected with the appropriate local drive for their unique situation without doubling up.

In the last couple of years, it has been a challenge to keep families together. This is our ideal situation, as it helps ensure similar gifts between siblings. Those who sign up here are contacted first in an attempt to fill large families or more specialized requests.

Our friends at Cornerstone were back again to help organize our closet! It has been such a blessing to have them regularly helping and brainstorming on how we make the space easier to navigate and more efficient.

Yesterday, we:

- established a new storage system for our winter hats, gloves, and scarves.

- unpacked our 750 sock donation from Bombas and reorganized our socks.

- established a new method for men’s and women’s underwear.

- put away 100 newly donated sweatshirts.

- started a new rack of school-branded clothing to make it easier for social workers to find the items that help kids feel a part of their community.

- utilized our newly-available bins to make hygiene items easier to access.

Our community… 💕

A student received a bike last spring because of a generous donation to MVP.

Scheels did a tuneup and it was on its way.

Fast forward to this fall, the student was hit by a car while riding the bike to practice. They are okay but the bike was not.

Today, we brought the bike to scheels to see if it could be repaired. It could not. Instead of leaving with a broken bike, they gave us a deal on a trade-in they had just prepared for resale AND suggested that we make sure the student had proper lighting gear for traveling to early morning practice in the dark.

Within two hours, the new bike was at the school waiting for them.

We had a great morning connecting with our school social workers!

As the number of students identified as experiencing homelessness has grown to more than 1,000 per school year, we recognize that we need to grow in how we communicate and educate.

We invited all school social workers and supporting school contacts to join us for breakfast. The goal was to celebrate their commitment to this challenging work and make sure they know how to utilize MVP. 25 amazing student advocates took time out of their day to join us! They even shared stories with one another about how we supported unique student needs to help add context around the flexibility of our support.

We are excited to make this an annual event to kick off the school year. We want to ensure that our school social workers know to contact us when they have a need that will help keep our students who meet the McKinney-Vento Homelessness Assistance Act requirements in school and reaching graduation.

Thank you so much to Altrusa International of Fargo for organizing a drive for sweatpants and hoodies to support our students. You can now find drop-off locations across the community. Valley News Live was kind enough to meet us at the Northport Library (one of the collection sites) to talk about the drive.
