Today is National Cannoli Day!

Cannoli are believed to have been created in Sicily during the ninth and tenth centuries, during a time of Arab rule. Arabs introduced new techniques for baking pastries in the region, along with new ingredients such as sugar, candied fruits, cinnamon, and pistachios.

As time went on, cannoli became associated with monasteries and convents. Nuns preserved the recipes and made cannoli for special occasions and religious festivals. They were a favorite way to indulge during Carnevale and commonly served at weddings to symbolize good fortune and fertility.

Nowadays, cannoli are not just prepared for religious festivals and special occasions. With our wonderful local Italian bakeries, we can enjoy cannoli every day!

So, in honor of today’s “holiday,” eat a cannolo!
