Safe Cats Coalition

Safe Cats Coalition WE ARE NOT A RESCUE!!! FREE TNR for community cats within the West Columbia, SC city limits and nearby portions of Lexington County.

If you live IN the city limits & only have a cat or two, please call WC Animal Control for TNR - it's their literal job. Contact (803) 543-6335

This is a FREE TNR Service for City of West Columbia Residents. What:
Safe Cats Coalition consists of Safe Cats Coalition volunteers working in partnership with Pawmetto Lifeline and West Columbia Animal Services to reduce t

he number of homeless cats in the city limits of West Columbia. Safe Cats Coalition volunteers will trap, vaccinate, and spay or neuter the stray and free-roaming cats in your neighborhood. While donations to help pay for the cost of this service are welcome, it will be provided at no cost. Why:
There are more cats in West Columbia than there are homes for the cats. Trap/Neuter/Return programs are the only programs that have been proven effective in reducing the number of free-roaming cats. While the reduction in the total population of neighborhood cats takes place slowly, other benefits of the process are immediate. Spayed and neutered cats do not engage in mating behavior, including yowling, roaming, and fighting. Often, neutered cats stop spraying. Returning the cats to their neighborhood after they have been spayed and vaccinated makes sense because, if the cats are removed, more cats will move to the neighborhood due to the vacuum effect. It is likely the new cats have not been spayed/neutered, and will exhibit the problem behaviors associated with mating. How:
If you would like to use this service, please call (803) 543-6335 or email us at [email protected]. One of our volunteers will arrange a time to trap the cats. The cats will be transported to Pawmetto Lifeline where they will be vaccinated, spayed or neutered, ear-tipped, microchipped, and returned.

UPDATE UPDATE! MT received antibiotics and had bloodwork and a urinalysis done. The bloodwork included a combo test which came back negative! 🥳 The rest of his bloodwork looks pretty good, so we updated his vaccines and took him back to his home. He was very glad to run into the bushes away from us 😅 We could still use help with the bill, if anyone has some spare change to donate ☺️

This is MT (short for Marshmallow Tail). He's a cat we TNR'd some years ago, and one of our volunteers helps feed the small colony where he lives. He started looking a little rough recently, like he had a flea allergy, but then he showed up looking like this 🙀 The weekday feeder is going to try and grab him (she's really good at that sort of thing and he will accept pets sometimes if he doesn't see your hand coming), so we can get him to the vet. If you feel so inclined to donate towards his care, our PayPal address is [email protected].

We'll update as soon as he's been "captured" and whisked to the vet. Keep your fingers crossed and little MT in your prayers 🥺❤️ Third photo is how good he used to look 😞

If you are unsure about the mother still being around, put a ring of flour around the kittens and periodically check it to see if it's been disturbed!

There was a fairly well-known "rescuer" here in the Midlands who routinely stole very young kittens from their feral mothers (without getting the mamas fixed!!!), would fundraise for them, only to have many of them pass away because they were too young to be taken from their mamas!!!

🐾 Found Kittens Outside? Please Don’t “Kitten-nap.”

Whenever possible, kittens should stay with their mother until they are about 5–6 weeks old.

During those early weeks, Mom provides the best nutrition, warmth, protection, and survival skills kittens need.

At 5–6 weeks of age, kittens can safely begin the next step:
✔️ Rescue and socialization
✔️ Veterinary care and vaccinations
✔️ Preparation for adoption

At the same time, Mom Cat should be spayed so the cycle of breeding ends.

• If Mom is friendly, she may be able to transition indoors.
• If she is feral, Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR) is the kindest option.

📊 How do you know if kittens need help?

✅ If they’re in a cuddle puddle and quiet — they’re likely fine.
✅ If they’re round and well-fed — they’re likely fine.

🚩 Kittens may need help if:

❌ They are skinny and screaming constantly
❌ They have crusty or infected eyes
❌ They are in a dangerous location

If kittens are in danger, move them to a nearby safe location and watch from a distance.

A helpful trick: play “kittens calling mama cat” on your phone and observe from afar. Many times, Mom will come running to retrieve her babies.

💔 Removing healthy neonatal kittens from their mother lowers their chances of survival.

This guide from Hannah Shaw explains how to determine kitten age and provide proper care.

Let’s protect kittens and stop the cycle by making sure Mom gets spayed.

03/19/2026

It’s the time of year where all unaltered adult female cats that have been outside or around unaltered males are pregnant - so here’s a reminder….

We mean this with all the kindness in the world, but when you have the opportunity to get a pregnant cat spayed before she delivers and you decide not to - this is what you don’t understand…..

You don’t understand that the number of cats kept safe their entire lives is a minority, not majority.

You don’t understand that you are projecting a human emotion onto an animal that they don’t share with you.

You don’t understand that there are thousands of other pregnant cats right now, not just yours.

You don’t understand that denying her the spay right now will force her to be nursing, in heat, then pregnant again while nursing.

You don’t understand that the number of homes that adopt a kitten and cannot afford vet care is far greater than the number of homes that can.

You don’t understand that not all births go smoothly and not all kittens survive and they all suffer for it. But a spay, regardless of pregnancy is not painful.

You don’t understand the amount of unsafe places kittens end up….hoarders, fake rescues (real popular right now), snake feeders, and just generally neglectful pet owners.

You don’t understand that the mom WILL NOT GRIEVE the loss of the pregnancy. She never chose it in the first place. This is only about you and your feelings. It’s not about the cat.

You don’t understand that “she’s about to pop” or “due any day” are your opinions. They are not fact.

You just don’t understand.

UPDATE: REUNITED!! Unknown is home safe & sound after 14 days, 21 hours :)

"I searched through pages and pages of lost cats on here looking for that elusive orange female. I finally found one that was lost in April 2025, and contacted the owner. Thankfully this was their cat!

Pawboost, it would be helpful if you would allow searches by color of animal :-("

Message from Finder: "This kitty appears to have been dumped or is clearly lost. It's either a female or a neutered male - it's at Pawmetto Lifeline right now and they will either fix it for TNR or keep it and put it up for adoption if it's friendly. It's very vocal so I know it's not feral. It is scared, though, and is clearly intimidated by the big wide world. I hope it's microchipped and the owner is found, or PL keeps it for adoption ☹️"

Wahoo!!! 🥳 Way to go, Aiken County!!! 😍

Spending money to save money is the strategy behind Aiken County’s plan to build a low cost spay/neuter clinic.

A couple of weeks ago, we trapped this sad prego kitty at a trailer park, where many of the cats ate out of a dumpster 🥺 We could tell she was elderly, and had been unloved and uncared for for a long time. She was friendly, though, so we asked the clinic to evaluate her for adoption. (If they had decided not to take her in, one of us would have taken her home 😶) She was ultra-friendly, so they decided to keep her. This poor bebe went into labor while there, and delivered two(?) deformed stillborn kittens, one of them having two legs. 😞

Fast forward to now, "Agnes" is in a foster home and doing much much better. 😻 Her adoption fee is only $25 ❤️

UPDATE: Lizzie has found a new home! 🥳 Thank you everyone who has shared her story ❤️

HELP NEEDED!!!

This is Lizzie - her owner will be unhoused at the end of the month, and he is desperately looking for a new home for his beloved cat, Lizzie. We are unsure of her exact age, but will help update her vaccines/ get her tested, etc. before placing her somewhere. If you or anyone you know would like to give Lizzie a new home, please reach out to us!

We would get vet references and do a home check for anyone who is interested.
