Agency Spotlight: Youth and Family Project

Today we’re spotlighting the Youth and Family Project and their role in Washington County’s SART and DART teams.

At Youth and Family Project, our mission is to provide supportive services to youth and families, helping them achieve an increased sense of safety, hope, and belonging. Why do we participate in these multidisciplinary teams? Children and teens experience trauma differently. Our counselors can be a first point of contact for a young person reporting sexual assault, and 50% of our supervised visitation cases involve domestic violence history. We participate in these teams to advocate for the specific needs of the youngest members of our community.

Our services include: free individual and group counseling for youth, supervised Visitation & safe exchange, LGBTQ+ supports, homeless youth advocacy, Gingerbread House holiday support.

We believe that by working together, we can create a safer Washington County for every family. 🤝✨

At Lakeshore Regional Child Advocacy Center, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, heard, and supported. Through strong community partnerships, we provide a child-centered, trauma-informed response to abuse, walking alongside children and families with care, compassion, and coordination every step of the way. Children and families can access forensic interviews, advocacy, medical referrals, mental health referrals; all designed to promote healing and hope after trauma. Their mission is simple but powerful: to ensure all children’s voices are heard, protected, and valued. The Lakeshore CAC helps children and families move from crisis toward healing every single day.

June is recognized as Gun Violence Awareness Month. The intersection between gun violence and Domestic Violence is alarmingly lethal. Here we highlight that intersection and how it impacts our community as we try to move forward in supporting survivors.

FRIENDS, Inc. is the sole provider of shelter and support services for individuals affected by Domestic and Sexual Violence in Washington County. Our mission is to break the cycle of Domestic and Sexual Violence through Shelter, Support Services, and Education. We envision a community where every individual lives free from the threat of violence, where people are educated and empowered to support survivors, and where healthy, respectful relationships are the norm.

FRIENDS, Inc. offers a 24/7 Crisis and Help Line, Short Term Emergency Shelter, Adult and Children’s Advocacy, Legal Advocacy, Support Groups, and Prevention Education. Through emotional support, safety planning, community resources, and educational programming, FRIENDS, Inc. works to empower survivors, promote healing, and prevent violence throughout the community. All services are free and confidential. Support is available to all individuals regardless of gender, race, citizenship, sexual orientation, disability, income, religion, or age.

The Advocates at FRIENDS, Inc. are deeply dedicated to supporting survivors with compassion, empathy, and trauma-informed care. They are always happy and prepared to assist individuals and families in accessing support, resources, advocacy, and safety services. In addition, the Sexual Violence Advocate at FRIENDS, Inc. proudly serves as the Co-Chair of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), working collaboratively with community partners to strengthen survivor support and response efforts throughout Washington County.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to recognize that healing is not always linear; surviving trauma can impact every part of a person’s emotional, physical, and mental well-being.
For survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, simply getting through the day can take incredible strength. There is no “right” way to heal, no timeline to follow, and no shame in asking for support.
You are worthy of safety.
You are worthy of support.
You are worthy of healing.
As a community, we can make a difference by listening without judgment, believing survivors, and creating spaces where people feel safe reaching out for help.
This month and every month, let’s continue to break the stigma surrounding mental health and trauma.
