The measure of a life is not its length, but the love it leaves behind – and grief is simply the echo of that love.

Birthdays don’t stop just because someone is no longer here…they just change.
Today, Sean would be 37.
There’s something about birthdays that brings it all back. The joy of who he was, and the ache of all that we didn’t get to see. Living without him is surely the hardest thing we’ve ever had to do. Keeping his memory alive has been key to our survival. Often that means sharing billions of photos on Facebook or sending all of you messages via email. Thank you for being part of our healing.
It feels impossible that we’ve now lived more years without him than with him…gone longer than we had him. That sentence doesn’t feel like it should be true. And yet, his life continues to echo in everything. In the way we love, in the memories that surface when we least expect them, in the quiet moments where his presence somehow feels near.
Grief has taught me that love doesn’t end – it stretches. It reaches across time, across absence, across all the “what should have been” moments. Today, we’re choosing to celebrate the 18 years we were given – to remember his laugh, his impact, and the way he changed us forever. To hold both…the sorrow, and the gratitude. Grief has a way of reminding us just how deeply we love.
I’ll let myself feel it all today – the ache, the gratitude, the memories, even the smiles that sneak in because every bit of it is rooted in love for our son.
There won’t be a lipstick birthday message on his mirror this morning, or a cinnamon roll with a candle at breakfast. There won’t be a scavenger hunt this evening for him to search out his birthday gifts…with lame clues that I always tried to make rhyme. Thirty-seven clues would be a challenge, but I’d happily do it.
We carry him with us – in the way that we love, in the way we remember, in the way we hold tight to the people around us. And we see his heart still beating on in The Sean Medical Center in Uganda – his legacy, serving and helping thousands upon thousands of people. That was Sean’s heart…to love, to give, and to make a difference that would outlive him.
Thank you to all of you who help make that happen through your generous giving to The Sean Medical Center. You’re all ROCK STARS and we appreciate you keeping the legacy alive.
Happy birthday to our hilarious, sometimes mysterious, full of heart and compassion for the underdog, son…You are our inspiration and we love you forever and always. Mom and Dad
P.S. Hope your calendars are marked for Sunday, May 3, for our Partner Appreciation Bash. We want to say thank you one more time before we head back to Uganda!

Today we remember Aron…a giant of a boy who truly fought the good fight.

Aron was just 12 years old, but his courage, his joy, and his quiet strength reached far beyond his years. We first met him in the village at his home when he had just turned 11, bravely showing us the swelling in his knee he thought happened from a fall he had taken some months earlier. We saw that it needed a much deeper study and a biopsy was needed to know what we were dealing with. Diagnosis took a bit of time in Uganda, but eventually we learned it was Osteosarcoma. And from that moment on, Aron faced more than any child should ever have to face.
In September of 2024, his left leg was amputated. And yet—Aron remained Aron. Full of heart. Full of resilience. He never missed a Saturday at Little Lights. He would always tell us it was his favorite day of the week. You would find him playing checkers with Mike, determined and focused to beat his opponent…eventually earning the title of “Checker King” at the Little Lights Showcase of Stars this past October. We’ll never forget his face as he was carried proudly across the stage, wearing his crown. Oh, how he smiled.
Even with only a few words of English, Aron had a way of making us feel like he understood everything. He would smile, nod, and light up a room without saying much at all. And every single child in Little Lights loved him. They protected him, surrounded him, prayed over him, and stood by him.
Tragically, the cancer returned in August 2025, and it had aggressively spread through his remaining leg and had metastasized to his lungs. And once again Aron showed us what courage looks like. We like to remember him then—not in fear—but smiling ear to ear as he set off for Kampala. The big city, full of new experiences…hotels, real beds, restaurants…things that must have felt like a whole new world. Through long hours, endless tests, and difficult days, Aron did not complain. Not once.
In Uganda there are few options for people with such aggressive cancers. For Aron, there were none.
But Aron was never alone.
One City’s Silver Mukhama walked closely with Aron—translating, visiting, checking on him, transporting him back and forth to town as needed, transporting him to Little Lights…. making sure he was never forgotten, never alone. He went the extra mile—literally—to be present in Aron’s life, many times a week, especially in these past months when we could not be there. Aron surely knew he was loved.
Then there is Jimmy. He spent time sharing his love of music with Aron...and dancing! We know they had some good laughs together.
And Kenny…our faithful long-distance driver, his friend…who turned long, hard journeys into moments of care and kindness. A compassionate soul carrying Aron when the roads were too long or the buildings too far. Watching over him every step of the way.

To Dauda and Annette, Aron’s parents…thank you for trusting us with your son. We had hoped and prayed for many more years with Aron. Our hearts are broken with yours.

But today, we also hold onto something deeper than our grief.
Because when we close our eyes, we don’t see sickness. We don’t see pain.
We see Aron—smiling that wide, beautiful smile…running, skipping…whole and free.
He is with Jesus now.
No more pain.
No more suffering.
He is healed. He is whole.
And oh…what a joy it must be to see him run again.
We love what Aron’s U.S. partner, Ranielle, shared about Aron…”Sweet angel on earth, now forever angel in heaven…No need for legs when you have wings.”
The Arons, the Jordans, the Joshuas, the Teddys, the Joels…This is why we do what we do. This is why we ask you to partner with us. Because every new medical team member, every new piece of equipment added to our diagnostic arsenal, means one more child seen…one more diagnosis caught, one more child saved. Thank you, partners, for gifting so many children with longer, healthier lives. Thank you for helping us make Aron's life a little longer, a little happier.

Dear Jesus…
We come to You today with hearts that are both heavy and grateful.
Heavy with grief as we say goodbye to Aron…
and grateful for the gift of his life, his courage, and his beautiful smile that touched us all.
Lord, we thank You for walking with Aron through every step of his journey—for giving him strength in suffering, joy in the midst of pain, and people who loved him deeply.
Today, we trust what You promise…that Aron is with You.
Whole. Healed. Running free.
No more pain, no more tears.
And Father, we lift up Dauda and Annette. Surround them with Your peace that passes understanding. Hold them close in their sorrow. Remind them that Aron’s life mattered, that he was deeply loved, and that he will never be forgotten.
We pray for all of us who knew him—that we would carry Aron’s spirit with us…his resilience, his quiet joy, his ability to smile even in the hardest moments.
And Lord, help us to hold onto hope…
the hope that this is not the end,
the hope that we will see him again.
Until that day, keep us faithful, keep us compassionate, and keep us near to You, and keep us ever strong and passionate to keep fighting for the least of these.
We place Aron into Your loving arms.
In Jesus’ name,
Amina

Even though International Women’s Day has passed, I’m still reflecting on the day set aside to celebrate and honor women. Today, I want to share the incredible strength of the mothers I know in Uganda.
Women who wake before sunrise and somehow keep going long after the rest of us would have waved the white flag. Women raising children, finding ways to educate them, stretching every coin, every cup of beans, and every ounce of strength.
They carry water, firewood, babies - the future of their families – an entire household on their shoulders…often all at the same time.
Honestly, if resilience were an Olympic event, you know these mothers would sweep the podium… then head home and make dinner. Bent over a 3-rock cooking fire…inhaling the equivalent of 3 packs of ci******es a day.
They sacrifice quietly, advocate fiercely for their children, and keep showing up every day with determination and hope.
I see them every week in the Medical Center. The long walk in bare feet, carrying their children on their backs. They know there is something wrong, and these days, they have learned not to hesitate…no matter how hard it is, they bravely get their children to the medical center.
So as we continue honoring this year’s theme of recognizing the strength and impact of women, I’m celebrating them. Quiet heroes. Fierce advocates for their children. Builders of the next generation.

What a year it has been at Light Village — and we have YOU to thank!

Because of your prayers, encouragement, generosity, and because of every single person God placed in our path with passion, skill, and a desire to make a difference, we’ve watched dream after dream come to life.

Our new aquaculture project is thriving.

What began as an idea has evolved into a vibrant, expanding system where vegetables and fish support each other in a symbiotic relationship that continually amazes us. It’s a wonderfully scalable ecosystem that provides sustainable food security for families in rural areas who desperately need nutritious food.

Our Light Fuel project is finally a reality.

Years of research, work, and problem-solving have come together, and we cannot wait to initiate this life-saving program further when we return to Uganda. We’re seeing the day when fewer trees are cut for cooking, fewer families breathe smoke-filled air, and more lives are protected from preventable illness. Real change is on the horizon.

Cost-saving, reliable Solar power is now running Light Village.
Just in time, too — as our electric company has transitioned to local government (who continue to struggle to provide consistent power), our solar panels are sustaining us. Reliable energy means growing impact at a lower cost.

Our Little Lights continue to shine.

These incredible children are growing in confidence, knowledge, and hope — and they’re bringing their families and community along with them. Every Saturday, tiny faces peek over the wall, longing to join the current Little Lights. While we would love to take everyone at once, we’re growing slowly and responsibly, making sure every child is well cared for and their essential needs met.

Meet our 15 new Little Lights on our website!

The Sean Medical Center is busier than ever.

Word has spread, and both our treatment and diagnostic services have been stretched in the best ways. We’ve met so many precious people who trusted our gifted staff with their care—and we’ve witnessed miracle after miracle.

But along with joy has come sorrow. Because of our now nationwide reputation for diagnostic excellence, we have attracted the most challenging cases—cases that many others have given up on. In many of these situations, due to numerous previous misdiagnoses and the time it takes for patients to finally find their way to us, the prognosis is all too often heartbreaking. It’s impossible not to feel deeply connected to every child and adult who walks through our doors. They become part of our hearts and entrenched in our prayers.

And through it all, it’s never far from our minds what — and who — has inspired us to keep going.

There is never a day that we don’t think of our son, Sean. We feel his absence in the quiet corners of our lives, at the Thanksgiving table, peering around the corner with his siblings in the annual Christmas jammies photo…and in the everyday moments we once took for granted. Grief will always walk with us, but so will the love that shaped us… and continues to lead us.

Our loss has become a compass, pointing us toward goodness — toward the love and kindness we can pour into a world that needs it so desperately.

In every child who laughs, every patient who heals, every life that is lifted, we feel the echo of his life inspiring us still.
And every single day, God gently reminds us that all of this – every step, every sacrifice, every victory, every challenge – is HIS calling and HIS journey.

Because of that, no matter the obstacles, we know that we know that we know, we are exactly where we are supposed to be. His faithfulness is our strength, and His purpose is our anchor.

We are grateful — deeply, overwhelmingly grateful.

For progress, for partnership, for people, for provision, and for the privilege of serving Jesus and His communities.

Thank you for standing with us, believing with us, praying with us, and helping Light Village continue to shine brighter every single day.

Can I get a Hallelujah?

One City is excited to announce the highly anticipated launch of our groundbreaking Light Fuel technology for charcoal and wood cooking fuel replacement! After extensive testing conducted by our brilliant Engineering and Chemistry partners at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, we have secured awesome new Brickquette-making machines and established a sustainable supply chain for the high-quality renewable raw materials needed to create our own, environmentally friendly, clean-burning, fuel brickquettes.

As we put the finishing touches on our brand-new manufacturing center at Light Village, we are ready to launch this incredible program that aims to make a real difference and save countless lives!

Approximately 2.1 to 3 billion people worldwide rely on wood, charcoal, and other solid fuels for cooking, primarily in developing countries, according to recent reports. These methods use open fires or inefficient stoves, generating harmful household air pollution and contributing to premature deaths, with women and children being disproportionately affected.

Please stay tuned for future updates.

We value the opportunity for education, and we also believe in giving a hand-up, not a hand-out. Over their school breaks, some of our older Little Lights take ownership of earning a portion of their school fee support by coming to work here at One City. It saddens us that access to education isn’t completely “free,” but we are happy that these Little Lights are also learning responsibility, the value of hard work, and the power to fight for knowledge.
