Celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday in June, Father's Day is an annual holiday honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It was first proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, in 1909; she was inspired, after listening to a Mother's Day sermon, to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised her and her siblings after her mother died. How will you be celebrating?

Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the day when 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas, which became the last bastion of slavery during the final days of the Civil War, were declared free by the U.S. Army. It was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when the 117th U.S. Congress enacted and President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth became the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces. Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday began after the Civil War when communities started decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers; after World War I, the day was expanded to honor those who died in all American wars. Volunteers often place American flags or flowers on graves at national cemeteries. Inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," many people wear red poppies as a symbol of remembrance. Americans are encouraged to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. local time to reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen.

Did you know Wellington once had its own mobile library?
Before digital downloads and even before many permanent library spaces, communities like ours found creative ways to bring books directly to residents. One standout piece of Wellington’s history is the Mobile Library, a traveling resource that helped connect neighbors to knowledge, stories, and each other.
🚐📚 Imagine waiting for the library to roll into your neighborhood—where stepping inside meant discovering new worlds, learning something new, and building community right here in Wellington.
It’s moments like these that remind us how innovation and connection have always been part of our village’s story—even in its earliest days.
At the Wellington Historical Society, we’re proud to preserve and share these snapshots of the past—because every memory helps tell the story of who we are today.
💬 Do you remember the Mobile Library or have a favorite local memory? We’d love to hear it below!
