Dear Wellesley,

Pan Asian Council wants to acknowledge the contributions the Black Community has made for us and how we must stand in solidarity with our Black sibs during this time of incredible pain and anguish. The murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, in addition to acts of violence perpetrated by police against Black people have highlighted the anti-Black racism that is ingrained in our society. An Asian man, Tou Thao, watched while his fellow officer killed George Floyd and in doing so, committed an act of violence against Floyd. We in the AAPI community must stop perpetuating white supremacy and confront out anti-Black racism with tangible efforts.

The Black community in the United States has helped make strides that we as Asians benefit from and too often, our community has taken advantage of the gains and in return, has perpetuated anti-Black behaviors and institutions. Without Black activism, Asian Americans would not have benefitted from Brown v. Board of Education (making segregated schools unconstitutional), Browder v. Gayle (making bus segregation unconstitutional), and Loving v. Virginia (striking down the ban on in*******al marriage), among other legal victories.

The Asian American Movement sparked in the 1960s has directly benefited from the traction of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as protesting strategies and activism. The Civil Rights movement is directly linked to AAPI movements for justice such as the gentrification of San Francisco's Manilatown to the recent attacks on Asian American’s during the COVID-19 pandemic. The AAPI community has learned from the Black community’s strategies to fight for justice without full recognition.

Pan Asian Council is committed to tackling this hypocrisy and to call out anti-Black racism within our community. We also want to recognize the students who identify both with the Pan Asian Community and the Black community. We see you and want to address you directly. As some of our e-board members are of mixed-race Asian descent, we understand the isolation brought on by the Asian and Asian American community because of the pervasive idea of “racial purity.” This idea, in addition to the anti-Black sentiments that are prevalent in our community, is a painful burden to carry and we want you to know that you are as much a part of our community as anyone who identifies as AAPI.

Our community must stand in solidarity with the Black community, not just in words but in actions. We encourage donations, signing petitions, and protesting, as well as sharing education resources with others. SILENCE IS VIOLENCE. SILENCE IS COMPLIANCE.

In sharing resources, we ask that you do not:
Post images of protesting unless the faces of protestors are obscured
Share videos of Black death or violence against Black people
Take advantage of violence for attention on social media
Share images without consent

Black lives matter.
