Bat World Sanctuary Bat World Sanctuary is a non-profit, accredited sanctuary providing rescue for bats worldwide. WHY SAVE BATS?
(728)

Bats are clean, gentle and intelligent, they are vital to the ecosystem, and they enhance our lives in many ways. Fruit and nectar bats bring us approximately 450 commercial products and over 80 different medicines through seed dispersal and pollination. Up to 98% of all rainforest regrowth comes from seeds that have been spread by fruit bats. Insect-eating bats are literal vacuum cleaners of the

night skies, eating millions upon millions of harmful bugs. They protect us by eating insect-pests that destroy crops as well as insects that cause human disease. WHAT WE DO
Bat World Sanctuary is on the front line to end the mistreatment of bats. Each year we rescue hundreds of bats who might otherwise die. Lifetime sanctuary is given to non-releasable bats, including those that are orphaned, injured, and retired from the exotic pet trade, zoos and research facilities. Bat World was founded in 1994 and is a 501c3 non-profit, accredited organization with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries . Donations allow us to continue our rescue efforts for bats.

Tonight on 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐚𝐩𝐬, an almost 360 view of Pomfrit (slowly) eating a mealworm. Near the end of the video, we see Her Tiny Majesty bend towards her foot and tail. Eastern red bats, among some other bat species, will use their feet and tail membranes while in flight to trap insects and then scoop or guide them to their mouths. The Poms mimics this behavior when she feels her chewing grip on the mealworm slipping a little bit. Bats are amazing! ✌🏼💜🦇

This video is 1 minute 31 seconds long. How much longer do you think it took Pomfrit to finish her worm? (Hint: You could go microwave popcorn to watch the ending, lol)?

Pup season is here! Please, be careful when sweeping away lawn litter, mowing your yard, w**d eating, etc. A single bat pup can weigh 20-30% of his mother's weight. Species like red bats commonly have 2 or 3 pups, making flight difficult. It's easy for these moms to become grounded - trying to evade predators is a very common reason. It's easy to mistake these tiny souls and their precious cargo as leaf or other ground litter, so please take extra care to watch for this keystone species in your outdoor activities. ✌🏼💜🦇

I WASN’T A DEAD LEAF ON YOUR PORCH.
MY BABY WAS STILL CLINGING TO ME.

You found me under the porch light.

Small.
Brown.
Folded.
Still as a curled leaf after wind.

Maybe you thought I was dead.

Maybe you thought I was a mouse.
Maybe you wanted to sweep me away before the cat noticed.

But look closer.

There is a tiny body pressed against my chest.

Tiny claws locked into my fur.
A face smaller than your thumb.
A baby who cannot fly, cannot hunt, cannot understand why the sky suddenly fell.

I am a mother bat.

Not every bat lives in an attic.
Some of us roost in trees, tucked among leaves, trusting bark, branches, and darkness.

But storms shake branches.
Heat drains bodies.
Tree trimming breaks roosts.
And sometimes a mother falls with her baby still holding on.

Please do not touch us with bare hands.
Do not pull my baby away from me.
Do not throw me into the air.
Do not give us water or food.

Keep cats, dogs, and children away.

Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or bat rehabilitator immediately.

If we are in danger and you are told to contain us, use thick gloves or a towel.
Place us gently in a ventilated box with soft cloth.
Keep the box dark, quiet, warm, and secure.

If anyone touched us bare-handed, or if a pet had contact, call animal control or your local health department before release.

Because I was not a dead leaf.

I was a mother on the ground,
trying to keep one tiny life
attached to mine.

Bat rescue guidance in the U.S. consistently warns not to handle bats with bare hands, not to feed or water injured bats, and to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or bat specialist. Nebraska Wildlife Rehab also gives specific guidance for a mother bat with babies attached: avoid bare-hand contact, keep them protected, and get rehab guidance; if she is not injured, a trained/safe rehang may be possible using a branch, but if she remains grounded or the baby is alone, they need rehabilitation help.

These are the moments we rehabbers strive for in rescue. Such a beautiful day for Alexander the evening sailor bat; such a fulfilling evening for Fledermausrettung Österreich - Bat World Austria 💜

Grapes are disappearing fast around here! 🍇🦇

Our African straw-colored fruit bats are making the most of snack time, stuffing their cheeks full of juicy grapes until they look extra round and adorable. Watching those little faces transform into fluffy, grape-filled chipmunk cheeks never gets old!

Some bats take dainty bites. Others believe the correct approach is to fit as many grapes into their mouths as possible 😆💜

Late night snack time in the geriatric enclosure ☺️🍌

This sweet elderly Jamaican fruit bat may be slower these days, but she still knows how to enjoy her favorite treats.

Thanks to your support, our permanent residents receive specialized care, soft foods, warm spaces, and lots of love as they grow old safely in sanctuary care ❤️🦇

🎶 Did you know? Some bat mothers sing to their pups. 🦇💕

Researchers have found that mother bats use unique vocalizations — almost like lullabies — to communicate with and comfort their babies. Each pup learns to recognize its mother’s voice among thousands of bats in a noisy colony.

🦇 Our bat friends in Austria urgently need to raise 399 euro for pup season incubators to help care for orphaned baby bats. ❤️

We’ll also be accepting donations on their behalf and sending the funds directly to them. Every dollar helps keep tiny pups warm, safe, and thriving during rehab season.

Thank you for supporting bats worldwide! 🌍🦇
