Today, we pause to honor the memory of Wayzata Police Department Sergeant James "J.W." Anderson.

On this date in 1982—his 36th birthday—Sgt. Anderson gave his life in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call, acting with courage that saved countless lives.

44 years later, his dedication and ultimate sacrifice remain an enduring pillar of our city’s history. Please join me today in keeping Sergeant Anderson, his loved ones, and all our dedicated officers who serve and protect Wayzata in your thoughts and prayers.

Wayzata will never forget.

For more than 80 years, Klapprich Park & Field has been the heartbeat of winter memories, youth hockey, and family fun in Wayzata.

That legacy began in the 1940s when Ed Klapprich and his sons—including a young Paul—rallied neighbors to haul wheelbarrows of fill dirt by hand, turning a marshy parcel into a gathering place for local kids. From helping build that first outdoor rink and playing on Wayzata High School’s inaugural state tournament team, to serving as our longtime Fire Chief and mentoring four generations of public servants, Paul Klapprich dedicated his life to this community.

As “Coach Paul,” he flooded the ice, tied skates, and taught thousands of kids not just how to play the game, but the deeper values of teamwork, humility, and giving back.

Now, our community is coming together to honor Coach Paul and the entire Klapprich family with a permanent, life-size bronze statue at Klapprich Park; a lasting tribute to a family whose generosity shaped Wayzata for generations.

Last night, Kevin Klapprich was officially sworn in as the City of Wayzata (Local Government) very first full-time Fire Chief.

The legacy of dedication to our fire department and community runs deep in the Klapprich family, spanning multiple generations of selfless service. Kevin was—and is—the absolute right choice to lead our department into this next chapter.

Please join me in congratulating Chief Klapprich! Thank you for your continued leadership and commitment to keeping Wayzata safe

What a difference a year makes, Wayzata!

A year ago, we stood together to break ground on a vision. Today, I had the honor of participating in the ribbon cutting to open these doors and celebrate what happens when a community invests in hope, healing, and human potential.

The Retreat MN roots run deep in Wayzata. From its origins as the Greenridge Estate in 1934 to its time with the Cenacle Sisters as a Catholic retreat center , this land has always been a sanctuary. When transition neared in the early 2000s, The Retreat led the way in creating a public-private partnership with the Trust for Public Land and the citizens of Wayzata stepped up, approving a $3 million bond referendum to permanently preserve these forested acres as public conservation land.

Those towering maples, oaks, elms, and basswoods surrounding us aren’t just a backdrop. Nature has a profound, restorative power, and the quiet embrace of our historic Big Woods plays a vital role in healing the mind, body, and spirit. If you haven’t recently, I encourage you to walk these trails and experience the peaceful renewal this land offers.

This moment also marks a significant leadership transition:

To John Curtiss: On your retirement, thank you for your decades of visionary leadership. Your impact on the global recovery community, the City of Wayzata, and me personally is immense.

To Patrick Flanagan: As new leadership steps in under my friend Patrick, I know The Retreat is in wonderful hands for this next chapter.

A year ago, we turned soil with shovels. Today, we celebrate expanded capacity for hope, restored lives, and stronger families right here in Wayzata. Congratulations to everyone who made this day possible! The Retreat and surrounding Big Woods are a Wayzata TREASURE!

Best of luck today to my friends Johnny Whitaker and Aaron Switz on HiFi on the Lake by Macanda Wayzata featuring an awesome lineup of EDM artists including Cole Knight, Hardt, Antoine, Matillo, and more!

I feel strongly that our community needs to support safe, positive opportunities for our youth and young adults to gather, connect, and have fun close to home even if the music gets a little loud for some of us every now and then. Creating spaces where our younger residents feel welcome and engaged is important.

Wishing the team a successful event and everyone attending a fun, safe time out on the lake!
