Wayzata is a very popular place to live work and play & in part for that reason I want to make you aware of some substantive changes to how our streets function for cars, people and bicycles. Shortly after JJ Hill Days the City of Wayzata (Local Government) will begin installing new speed limit signs across town. Traffic and safety is an issue that many of our residents wanted addressed.
Here is what you need to know about what is changing, what is staying the same, and how we got here:
What Is Changing
Starting in mid-September, Public Works will begin updating signs across the city.
Main Road Adjustments (First Phase):
Wayzata Blvd (Wayzata Public Works to Ferndale Rd): Reduced from 50 MPH to 40 MPH
Wayzata Blvd (Ferndale Rd to Central Ave): Reduced from 35 MPH to 30 MPH
Superior Blvd: Reduced from 35 MPH to 30 MPH
South Frontage Rd (Bushaway Rd to City Limit): Reduced from 35 MPH to 30 MPH
Shoreline Drive (City-controlled segment from CSAH 15 to Ferndale Rd): Reduced from 45 MPH to 40 MPH
Citywide Neighborhood Streets:
All other local residential streets throughout Wayzata will default to 20 MPH. New gateway signs reading “Citywide Speed Limit 20 MPH unless otherwise posted” will be placed at major entry points into the city.
What Is NOT Changing
Selected City Streets Remaining at 30 MPH:
Crosby Road (30 MPH)
Eastman Lane (30 MPH)
North Frontage Road from Gleason Lake Road to City Limit (30 MPH)
County & State Roads: Non-city roadways under Hennepin County or MnDOT jurisdiction are not changing and will keep their current posted limits (including 394/12 County Highway 101/Bushaway Road, Gleason Lake Road, and county portions of Shoreline Drive).
Background: How We Got Here
In June 2025, the City Council approved an initiative establishing a citywide default speed limit of 20 MPH on neighborhood streets, alongside strategic 5–10 MPH reductions on our main arterial corridors.
Prioritizing walkability, and roadway safety has been at the core of this effort. Slower speeds give drivers more time to react and dramatically lower the risk and severity of collisions as the traffic in town has increased.
Implementation Timeline:
Public Works will begin sign installations on the higher-speed corridors immediately following James J. Hill Days, followed by entry-point gateway signage and neighborhood street updates. Enforcement of the new limits will take effect as the signs are installed.
Also of note we continue to work with Three Rivers, the County and the State to put in place statewide regulation on ebikes which remains an issue in town. Thank you for your cooperation, patience, and continued commitment to keeping Wayzata safe for everyone!
