Non-profit hurricane relief team commited to long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts in WNC post-Hurricane Helene and for future natural disasters.

As the two year mark approached since Helene, the Centers for Disaster Philanthropy announced their fourth and final grant distribution through the Truist Foundation Western Carolina Recovery and Resiliency Fund. In response to unthinkable damage ensued by Helene, Truist awarded the CDP a $21 million dollar grant with goals for uplifting resiliency and recovery from Hurricane Helene. In the final distribution, this grant distributed nearly $4 million dollars from the fund, and allocated it to dozens of local organized recovery efforts across Western North Carolina.

First United Methodist Church under the program Rebuild Haywood received 500,000 in grant funding to support long-term recovery efforts. Long-term recovery for communities throughout Western North Carolina in Buncombe, Catawba, Cherokee, Cleveland, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, McDowell, Mitchell, Rutherford, Polk, Swain, the Qualla Boundary and other counties as needed. Rebuild Haywood aims to not only provide wrap-around case management services and construction assistance, rather instill or remind of the resiliency within each client.

This funding is essential in expanding our mission, to set foundations for our clients and community that encourage sustainable recovery. The funding is supporting Rebuild Haywood’s dedication to all of the community members impacted by Helene by allowing us to continue the positions of six of our core employees.

Good stuff alert! Our most recent addition to the team, Hunter Oates (introduction post coming soon) completed course requirements and graduated high school. Hunter was hired through partnership with a workforce development grant that aims to expand essential employment skills for high school students. Through this grant we have focused on honing time management, communication, and basic construction skills. Even more good news, now that he has completed his studies, he can work full time! Congratulations again Hunter!

As a recipient of the United Way Grant, we want to share our successes that this grant has allowed us to achieve. Through this funding source, we have assisted clients from rental assistance, utilities, to home goods and beyond. We are beyond grateful to be able to assist the community through this funding source, and thank you United Way for awarding this grant to Rebuild Haywood.

🎉 Rebuild Haywood is proud to announce that two construction team members finished a contracting certification course last month! 🎉
Danielle Wingate and Grantham Hansen completed an online certification course on Program Management and Development through the Associated General Contractors of America. This class honed multiple skills from estimating/job costing, contract administration, project administration, risk management, and leadership. Each of the values established core success for project management. We are so beyond proud of AGC graduates, and love to see their course skills thrive in the field!

Rebuild Haywood had the delight of working with a partnership event between Ready Haywood and the American Red Cross. Thank you for the additional support from Church World Services and Grace Episcopal in their assistance with packing emergency kits. Lastly, we extend a deep thanks to Cruso Fire & Rescue for hosting the event.

One word can describe this event- community. More than 75 people attended the event, this well beyond the attendance expected. We had a continuous cycle of adding more chairs as the Fire Department filled with more and more people. We were just deeply grateful for this events’ turnout.

Rebuild Haywood distributed 75 emergency preparedness kits that included a new weather radio. In addition to the radio, kits included:

Flash drive for important documents
Hygiene items
Inflatable pillow with blanket
Notepad and pen
Filter straw
Fire and waterproof bag
Mask and Gloves

Grace Episcopal and Church Word Services greatly supported Rebuild Haywood in the process of making these kits. We look forward to our next event when we can distribute more emergency preparedness kits!

We can officially announce the Cruso Flood Safety Event, this event is a partnership between Ready Haywood, Rebuild Haywood, and the American Redcross. We send our gratitude to Church World Services and Grace Episcopal, as they greatly assisted with the creation of the emergency kits. We also are thankful for the Cruso Fire & Rescue for hosting the event! On August 27th in the Cruso Fire Department, local organizers and community members alike will gather to learn more about Haywood County’s new outdoor siren alert system. In addition, there are emergency kits with weather radios available (one per household) and document scanning by Rebuild Haywood Case managers to scan important documents needed. Please see the attached flyer to know what documents to bring. We hope to see you there, and we look forward to gathering with the local community.

Rebuild Haywood was grateful to host a tour for NC Emergency Management and Grow NC- an organization that originates from the Governor’s Office for Recovery. Both organizations were vital in supporting Rebuild Haywood through allotting more than one million dollars in grant funds. They were able to see how the grant is utilized on a day to day basis by visiting several job sites, and meeting with our construction team. Thank you NC Emergency Management and Grow NC!

This has been an exciting week for us; it began with taking a new team photo to mark the growth and expansion we have experienced over the past months. In addition to our new photo, our construction and case management team has been working hard. This week our construction team was marked with decks, trim, and classes! It’s back-to-school season for us too, as two of the construction team members- Danielle and Grantham attend Project Management Certification classes. Lastly, on our case management side, more clients are moving forward in the RenewNC process, and one client received their keys to their new RenewNC house this week! We are beyond grateful and excited for the accomplishments this week.

We are beyond grateful for the Independent Presbyterian Church Foundation’s grant; this grant helped us purchase a much-needed addition to our construction team! This purchase does not only help homeowners impacted by Helene, but it helps a local business as well. Riverside Trailers & Truckbeds was hit hard by Helene, and we are proud to support local small businesses impacted by Helene.
