Software updates are easy to put off, but every delay can leave the door open for cybercriminals.

During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, NCMS is reminding our community that keeping devices, applications, and operating systems up to date is one of the simplest ways to strengthen your cybersecurity.

Updates often include critical security patches that address known vulnerabilities. When that notification appears, don’t keep clicking “Remind me later.” Install updates promptly and enable automatic updates whenever possible.

Don’t give cybercriminals an easy meal. Keep your software updated and your defenses strong.

: Turn On Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

MFA requires an additional verification step beyond your password, making it much harder for someone to access your account even if your credentials are compromised.

Whenever MFA is available, turn it on—especially for email, financial accounts, work systems, and other accounts containing sensitive information.

This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, strengthen your defenses with one simple step: enable MFA.

Maybe it's a colleague who consistently goes above and beyond? A mentor who has helped develop the next generation of security professionals. A team that introduced an innovative solution? Or someone whose career reflects an extraordinary commitment to the security mission?

: Think Before You Click

Before clicking a link, opening an attachment, or responding to an unexpected message, take a moment to verify the sender and look for warning signs such as unusual requests, urgent language, or unfamiliar links.

When in doubt, use a trusted method to contact the sender directly.
During this Cybersecurity Awareness Month, remember that a few extra seconds of caution can help prevent a much bigger security problem.
