Tennessee is making firearm safety education part of the public school curriculum, becoming the first state in the country to require it statewide.
The new requirement is aimed at teaching students what to do if they encounter a firearm, with an emphasis on preventing accidents rather than teaching children how to shoot or handle guns.
That distinction matters. The lessons are designed around basic safety principles, including treating every firearm as if it is loaded, never pointing one at something you do not intend to shoot, keeping fingers away from the trigger, and understanding the importance of the target and what is beyond it.
For Tennessee families, the idea puts firearm safety in a similar category to other lessons meant to prepare children for potentially dangerous situations. Supporters argue that in a state where many households own fi****ms, kids should know how to react safely if they ever come across one.
It is also a significant first for Tennessee. According to the information highlighted here, no other U.S. state has previously made gun safety courses mandatory across all public schools.
The policy is likely to generate plenty of discussion over what role schools should play in firearm education.
