SCDR has observed a great need in our community to assist, rescue, foster, provide medical care and love for the unwanted, homeless, neglected and abused animals we so often see. We are dedicated to rescuing dogs left homeless for whatever reason โ€“ dogs in public shelters where they are at high risk of euthanasia due to pet overpopulation and an over-abundance of backyard breeders, dogs given up by their owners because of difficult circumstances, those in danger of abuse or neglect and also the temporary placement of military family dogs during times of deployment. We place dogs in loving, responsible, committed, permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives.

Let's talk about Luke today! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿพ

**Ten years old. Green eyes. Great manners. And quite possibly one of the easiest dogs you'll ever meet.**

So why is Luke still waiting for a family?

Honestly, we wish we knew.

Luke is one of those wonderful dogs who makes being a dog owner feel easy. He's house trained, crate trained (but doesn't need it), affectionate, loyal and already knows how to live happily in a home. He loves going for walks, playing fetch, running around outside and then settling in for some serious cuddle time with his people.

And don't let that 10-year-old number fool you, Luke still has plenty of pep in his step! He's the perfect mix of fun when you're ready to play and relaxed when it's time to hang out.

Luke is also wonderful on leash. While he prefers to be the only dog in his home, he isn't reactive when he sees other dogs out on walks. He can simply enjoy an outing with his person and go about his business - something that makes life with an only-dog guy like Luke so much easier.

And people? Those are Luke's specialty. โค๏ธ

He bonds deeply with his humans, is incredibly gentle with children, and truly just wants to be part of a family. Give him a ball to chase, a nice walk, a comfy place to sleep and people to love, and Luke is one happy boy.

There are some pretty great advantages to adopting a dog who's already figured out this whole โ€œliving with humansโ€ thing. No puppy chaos. No starting from scratch. Luke already understands home life and is ready to walk through your door and become your devoted best friend.

He doesn't need a house full of dogs.

Turtleโ€™s story with South Charlotte Dog Rescue began just a few days before Christmas in 2021.

His mama had tragically been hit in the road, and Turtle and his 11 siblings were brought to the shelter. We couldnโ€™t imagine leaving 12 tiny, motherless puppies there over Christmas, so SCDR brought them into rescue and, appropriately, named them our 12 Days of Christmas litter. And oh my goodness, were they precious! โค๏ธ

Over the next few months, one by one, Turtleโ€™s siblings found their forever homes. But somehow, Turtle kept getting overlooked.

Maybe it was because he was a little more hesitant with strangers. Maybe it was because car rides were most definitely NOT his thing. Leash walks? He wasnโ€™t particularly interested in those either. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Turtle has always known what he likes - and what he doesnโ€™t - and heโ€™s never been afraid to let you know!

Now, nearly five years later, Turtle has grown into the sweetest, low-key, slightly stubborn little old man trapped in a dogโ€™s body. โค๏ธ

Heโ€™s a homebody at heart. Give Turtle a comfy couch, a fenced yard where he can putter around, a few short walks, and his favorite person nearby, and he is perfectly content. He even prefers to handle his bathroom business at home, thank you very much. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Turtle was raised around lots of other dogs, but heโ€™s selective about his canine friends. He does best with calm, easygoing female dogs, although he would be perfectly happy being your one and only and soaking up all the attention himself. Cats, however, are a definite no for Turtle.

And people? Turtle LOVES his people. Those early hesitations around strangers have turned into a genuine love of humans. Older children are the best fit for him, simply because he appreciates people who understand that not every dog enjoys being grabbed or fussed over.

Turtle isnโ€™t looking for a family who wants a jogging partner or a dog who spends his weekends bouncing from one adventure to another.

Heโ€™s looking for his person.

Someone who appreciates slow mornings, quiet evenings, couch time, a little backyard puttering and having a loyal companion nearby. Someone who will love his quirks, laugh at his stubborn streak and understand that Turtle is happiest simply being home with the people he loves.

Weโ€™ve loved this boy since he was one of 12 tiny Christmas puppies, and itโ€™s hard to believe heโ€™s still waiting.

But we know his family is out there somewhere. Maybe theyโ€™ve just been waiting for Turtle, too.

Turtle has been patiently waiting at South Charlotte Dog Rescue for his forever family, and franklyโ€ฆ we think itโ€™s time this handsome guy got his own set of keys. ๐Ÿก

At just shy of 5 years old and around 40 pounds, Turtle is proof that sometimes the best things come in a package thatโ€™s just a little larger than socially acceptable. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Turtle LOVES to explore. He plays hard, lounges harder, and believes life is best experienced at full speed followed by a very serious nap. Heโ€™s got personality for days and is ready to trade his long-term-resident status for something much better: FOREVER FAMILY status. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿก Turtleโ€™s Dream Home:

โ€ข Humans who are home more often than not โ€” heโ€™d like some roommates who actually show up for the lease.
โ€ข A FENCED YARD IS A MUST for this curious explorer. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿพ
โ€ข Another dog might be okay, but Turtle would prefer a calm female companion. Theyโ€™ll need to meet ahead of time to make sure everyone agrees on the roommate situation.
