Great Books for Kids gifts engaging books to elementary-aged kids in southeast GA for their homes!

The first book delivery of the 2026-2027 school year is “in the books!” 🎉

Every Kindergarten student at Mamie Lou Gross Elementary School AND Woodbine Elementary School will receive a book from the Very First Reading box set - a set of hardcover books for beginning readers - for their homes! That’s over 100 children! 👏🏻

Leftover books will be placed in the schools’ book vending machines, where children can earn tokens to receive a free book!

This set is one of my favorite resources for early readers - great text, engaging illustrations, and reading comprehension activities in the back of the books! So when it recently went on big time sale, I scooped them up for the kids!

Rest in peace, Dolly Parton. Thank you for all you did for children through your Imagination Library, putting millions of books into the hands and homes of children worldwide.

I once announced at a grant recipient ceremony that I one day hope to become the Dolly Parton of southeast Georgia, giving books to children for their homes on a massive scale. It’s still my hope & prayer. 💗📖

Thank you to all the families who came to our first Great Books for Kids Story Time & Craft event at the Woodbine Public Library this week!

I read Best Behavior to the kids & gifted a hardcover copy of the book to each child who attended, thanks to our sponsor, Altamaha River Trading Company, and our fantastic donors, Madison Zapf & Arthur Mitchell!

Then we talked about ways we could “be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud,” such as being kind, patient, considerate or being a friend! We ate delicious fruit leather while completing our craft.

It sure was great to see all the kids & families after a summer break.

THANK YOU to the fantastic librarians who provide us with a wonderful space for our monthly event, allow us to borrow their craft supplies & set up/clean up the space! We love having you as our partner for FOUR YEARS of story times!!

This absolutely breaks my heart.

In Georgia, more than half of the children in the state cannot read at grade level. This is not in some far off place — it is at a school near you.

Great Books for Kids exists to help children get excited about reading, put engaging books into children’s hands and homes, encourage reading at home to grow skill sets faster, and lead children to a greater chance at success, not only in school, but in life.

If you feel led, please consider making a donation to support our mission. Every child deserves to to have amazing books in their home to help them become a confident, capable readers. 💗🙏🏻

🦕 Recently, we gifted all the kindergarten students at Woodbine Elementary School and Mamie Lou Gross Elementary School the book The Dinosaurs Who Loved Applause. The books are theirs to take home & keep forever!

Mrs. Beam at Woodbine Elementary saved them for a bit, then passed them out to use with their dinosaur unit. I love it!! 🦖

📘 The Book Without Story is a fantastic read aloud! Recently, over 200 kindergartners received a hardcover copy to keep thanks to our amazing community partners:

• Goodyear Elementary School was supported by a grant from Golden Isles Rotary Club.

• Mamie Lou Gross Elementary School & Woodbine Elementary School were supported by a grant from the Okefenoke REMC Foundation.

All in all, over $2600 in books were gifted to local children that day. We heard they are loving the steady stream of books they have received this year so far. Excitement about books & reading?? YES, PLEASE! That’s what this is all about. 📖

On Tuesday, Great Books for Kids held its April Story Time and Craft event at the Woodbine Public Library. I read Build Me a Home & gifted a hardcover copy of the book to every child who attended, some who are pictured here.

Thank you to our sponsor, Altamaha River Trading Company, whose generous donation enabled us to purchase the books!!

Then we completed a home design activity while we ate Rice Krispie treats.
