Hey, folks, it's been a while.

If the past year has been any indication, we seem to be living in a world that lacks safety and security. For some, these feelings can be retraumatizing, and it is more important than ever that we create spaces where our customers, clients, and patrons can feel grounded.

This is why I am developing a summer workshop series on creating trauma-informed spaces. This workshop will be perfect for any service group or organization, including clinics, libraries, schools, offices, and more.

The first half of this workshop will focus on learning more about trauma and trauma-informed frameworks, including ethical considerations and benefits of implementing this framework. The second half of the workshop will look at existing spaces, practices, and policies in your organization and determining what works, what doesn't, and how you can shift toward a more trauma-informed approach.

While this workshop will not be a "trauma-informed certification," it should give you some new ideas and perspectives about creating an environment that is safer and more welcoming.

If you are interested in learning more, please reach out! This workshop can be done virtually or in person.

I'm SO EXCITED to be partnering with the Waverly Public Library for music programming this summer! There are two great opportunities to have some fun and learn a few things with me in July.

First, I'll be joining Ms. Emily and Mr. Trevor for Music and Crafts Storytime on Mondays in July (7/7, 7/14, and 7/21). Each of these story times will be followed by a quick craft that parents and kiddos (ages 0-5) can do together. No registration required! More information here: https://www.waverlyia.com/events/public-library/music--crafts--D07072025.aspx

Then, from July 7-11, I'll be leading a week-long guitar workshop for 5th-12th graders! This beginner guitar class will go over the basics of the instrument, and we'll work on learning a few chords and strumming patterns with a goal of learning a song by the end of the week! Guitars are provided, and pre-registration is required. More information here: https://www.waverlyia.com/events/public-library/-guitar-class-with-kyle-flemingm-D07072025.aspx

Public libraries play an important role in our society, and it is up to all of us to make sure that our libraries stay funded and open for everyone. Please get out this summer and support your public library!

Spring Revamp Update -

I have now fully relocated FMT from the Champaign-Urbana area to the Cedar Valley (Waverly, Waterloo, Cedar Falls) in Iowa, and I’m laying some ground work for speaking engagements, community arts activities, and (potentially) taking on a few clients for the summer.

The Iowa Legislature recently passed SF 418, which strips transgender humans of civil rights protections in the state. This egregious violation of the Fourteenth Amendment is shocking, infuriating, and embarrassing. Fleming Music Therapy stands in solidarity with transgender, q***r, and gender non-conforming humans in Iowa and across the nation. I am happy to sign this pledge from One Iowa and promote my values of being an aspiring ally to folks across the gender spectrum.

We're calling on businesses across Iowa to commit to being a safe and affirming space for LGBTQ+ Iowans by signing our pledge. The community is watching—this is the moment to choose where you stand. Your support will be remembered. So will your silence.

One Iowa and One Iowa Action will publicly share the names of businesses that take this stand. But signing on is just the first step— we need you to show up. Make public statements, show your support, and join us at the Capitol tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. to speak out against the Iowa Civil Rights Removal Act.

Not a business? Share this graphic and spread the word. Visibility matters and your support sends a powerful message.

Someone must have been cleaning out some closets in the Wartburg College Department of Music office because today I found a couple of recordings from my senior recital in my mailbox.

A video recording of my junior recital can be found on YouTube, but there is no video recording of my senior recital, and I (wrongfully, it seems) assumed I would never hear this set again.

Rather than listen to it and cringe on my own, let's turn this into something fun: If I can sell 50 copies of my ebook "Music for Fun" by August 1, 2024, I will set up a live stream where we all listen to my senior recital together. They also gave me my program notes so you can also learn more about the pieces I sung and why I picked them!

You can find the link to my book on my website: https://flemingmusictherapy.org/merch/p/music-for-fun-ebook

Fleming Music Therapy has been on an extended hiatus while I dealt with a multitude of events both personal and professional. Now that things have settled down, I can finally focus on making some necessary updates and revising some plans as FMT settles into its new home.

Anticipated relaunch date is March 5, which also happens to be around our third birthday! While I'm lining things up to make that happen, please take a moment to sign up for the monthly newsletter that will keep you up to date on service offerings, workshops, and more.

Sign-up link is here: https://mailchi.mp/eec3b0db4f8a/monthly-newsletter-sign-up

See you in a couple of weeks!

The exciting news can finally be revealed: Fleming Music Therapy is MOVING!

I have accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Music Therapy at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA, which means I will be moving my family and my business to the Cedar Valley. Availability for new clients and supervisees are still temporarily suspended while I take the summer to establish myself in the area, so be on the look out for news about waitlists and other educational opportunities.

I'm deeply appreciative of my time in Champaign-Urbana. It's a beautiful community with many wonderful people, and I thank each and every one of you for your curiosity and generosity over the years. I'm sad to leave, but know that a piece of my heart will always be in C-U, and I can't wait to come back and visit.

For now, my focus is on moving operations to the Waverly/Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. I can't wait to make a positive change in my new home community.

I haven't been actively promoting this page or my business in a while, yet every so often I get an email through my website from someone looking for services. It's always an honor to have that conversation with someone, even if the details of a potential partnership don't always work out.

However, I have some exciting news on the horizon, and because of this, I have to temporarily suspend clinical and professional development services for the short term.

I can't wait to share what's in store for the next chapter of FMT!

As we enter Black History Month this year, it can be easy to be hopeless and cynical. Between the national push to eliminate anti-racism and anti-oppressive practices in K-12 and college education, to the public lynchings of Black people by police, to the overall rise in racism and antisemitism in the US, it makes sense to give up, hunker down, and wait for the impending end of the world.

Yesterday, I saw this quote from writer and activist Audre Lorde (1934-1992) which I found motivational: "To refuse to participate in the shaping of our future is to give up. Do not be misled into passivity either by false security (they don't mean me) or by despair (there's nothing we can do). Each of us must find our work and do it."

I encourage you to explore what you can do where you are. Reflect on where you can channel your time, energy, and money to uplift historically marginalized voices. Look for ways to show up and speak out on the issues that are important to you. Make the difference in your part of the world.

[Image was created by me using an image of Audre Lorde under a Creative Commons license through Wikimedia Commons. I intentionally chose not to put the FMT logo in the corner in an effort to better center Lorde's message.]
