The Waunakee Teachers Association believes that schools should be sanctuaries for learning. Our membership acknowledges that immigration enforcement activity on and around school campuses may create fear, trauma, and disruption that could harm not only immigrant students and their families, but the school community as a whole. We abide by our enduring commitment to support all students and ensure that agitation and intimidation have no place in our classrooms.

In light of increasing tensions in communities across the country, and the possible impact of federal immigration enforcement (ICE) actions on immigrant families and immigrant students’ educational rights, the WTA—in solidarity with community organizations including Voces de la Frontera, Centro Hispano, and the ACLU of Wisconsin—asserts its position (in accordance with the law) that all students have the right to attend school regardless of their immigration status or the immigration status of their family members.

Waunakee’s immigrant community is an integral part of our school district; they deserve our unwavering and heartfelt support. Our membership pledges—to the best of our abilities—to bar any third-party access to a school site without permission of a district administrator, and condemns the admission of ICE agents into any district building without a valid judicial warrant signed by a judge. We will also follow the everyday, Standard Response Protocol school safety plans that the WCSD already has in place to keep our students safe.

We stand ready and willing to collaborate with others in the process of further developing clear and forward-facing plans to ensure that members of our school community—regardless of their immigration status—are safe from immigration enforcement on school grounds.
