Join us next Thursday, May 7th, 12pm at the Chace Forum in Waterville to learn about the Maine International Film Festival’s partnership with student filmmakers from Waterville’s Mid-Maine Technical Center and local businesses. The talk will explore their global experience that connected communities around the story of coffee. For this talk we'll be joined by Mike Perreault, Executive Director of the Maine Film Center and the Maine International Film Festival, part of Waterville Creates.

The Mid-Maine Global Forum will provide coffee and cookies for the event. Bring-your-own lunch is welcomed!

***One week from today! Join us on Monday, March 9th at 12pm noon in the Chace Center Forum for our upcoming event: "“Report Back from the West Bank: Perspectives from an International Observer"***

Moriah will be joining us to speak about her observations and first-hand experience as a recent observer in Masafer Yatta, an area of 20 small villages in the mountains of the West Bank. She will share with us video footage and her reflections on the developing situation, and speak about her experience observing and documenting daily life in that community. The Mid-Maine Global Forum will be providing cookies and coffee for the event. BYO lunch is welcome!

Join us on Monday, Dec. 1st, 12:00pm at the Chace Center in Waterville for our December lunch talk with Ken Walsh!

Ken Walsh, coming from the New Rochelle Boys & Girls Clubs as the Assistant Executive for 7 years, began his Maine journey in 1992 when he became the Executive Director of the Waterville Boys & Girls Club. In 1998, following a successful campaign to establish the Alfond Youth & Community Center, the only merged Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA in the nation, Ken assumed the role of CEO, a position he held until his retirement in 2026. Over the course of his tenure, Ken helped raise over $100 million, transforming the AYCC into a nationally recognized model for youth development.

Ken will be joining us to speak about his transformative work connecting youth in Maine and around the world through sports and cross-cultural exchange.

Join us for our November lunchtime talk, "Language and Identity in Tunisia" with Haythem El Hazel. This talk delves into Tunisia’s rich linguistic landscape and the intricate relation between language and identity. It explores why Tunisians blend French and Arabic in daily conversation and the evolving role of English.

El Hazel is the Fulbright Arabic instructor at Colby College and holds a master’s degree in applied linguistics. He is passionate about teaching languages and cultural exchange, and enjoys helping students develop their language skills and deepen their understanding of diverse cultures.

The talk will be held next Monday, Nov. 17th at 12:30pm (note the later start time) at the Chace Center in downtown Waterville!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Prof. Ben Scharadin's lunchtime talk on U.S. food assistance systems! We learned not only about the history of and changes in food assistance systems in the U.S., but also about how these systems compare to our neighbors' systems in Mexico and Canada.

“Recent Changes in U.S. Food Assistance and Comparisons to non-U.S. Food Systems” with Ben Scharadin

Wednesday, Oct. 15, 12 noon at the Chace Community Center

Those who attended the Forum's Linda Cotter Speaker Event this summer will remember Prof. Ben Scharadin from Colby College as the moderator at that event! Prof. Scharadin is now joining us to share information about his own research and perspectives on inequities related to food access and assistance, both here and abroad.

Ben Scharadin is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Colby College whose research focuses on the intersection of public policy, poverty, and inequality with an emphasis on food securi.

As always, guests are welcome to purchase a lunch (And you can do so by clicking the link below)! Prof. Scharadin will share a presentation on this topic and his remarks will be followed by a Q&A.

Local event that may be of interest to MMGF members!

Colby College Hosts “Greening Latin America” Symposium

Colby College’s Latin American Studies Program will host a two-day symposium, Greening Latin America, on September 26–27 in downtown Waterville.
The event opens Friday, September 26, with a film screening at the Maine Film Center (93 Main St. in Waterville, ME). From 7–9 p.m., Puerto Rican documentary filmmaker and journalist Juan Carlos Dávila will present Vieques: una batalla inconclusa and Farmers of the Sea. A Q&A with Dávila, moderated by Professor Nico Ramos Flores of Colby’s Latin American Studies Program and Spanish Department, will follow.
The symposium continues Saturday, September 27, with a full day of presentations and discussions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Greene Block + Studios (18 Main St. in Waterville, ME). Breakfast will be served at 9 a.m., and lunch at 12 p.m. Featured presentations will be:
