It is profound sadness we announce the passing of Charles “Charlie” Theobald, a dedicated leader, brother, and friend whose impact on the fire service and our community will never be forgotten.
Charlie proudly served with Winslow Fire Rescue from 2005 to 2018. He began his career as a firefighter (2005–2008), quickly earning the respect of his peers through his steady presence and unwavering commitment to the job. In 2008, he was promoted to Captain, serving with distinction until 2015. His leadership, integrity, and ability to guide others through the toughest calls defined his time in that role. From 2015 to 2018, Charlie served as Deputy Chief, helping shape the department and mentor the next generation of firefighters. On several occasions, he stepped up to serve as Interim Chief, answering the call whenever leadership was needed.
Before his time in Winslow, Charlie was also a proud member of West Islip Fire-Rescue, where his dedication to service first began. No matter the patch on his shoulder, his heart remained committed to protecting others.
Charlie’s legacy is not only written in his years of service or the titles he held, but in the lives he touched, the firefighters he mentored, and the community he so faithfully protected. He led with humility, strength, and a deep sense of duty.
It was our profound honor to es**rt Charlie to the funeral home, a final ride befitting a man who gave so much of himself to others. Standing guard with him for 48 hours was a solemn and sacred privilege — a reflection of the respect, admiration, and brotherhood he earned throughout his career. We stood watch not only out of tradition, but out of love and gratitude.
Rest easy, Chief. Your watch has ended, but your legacy lives on in every siren, every call answered, and every firefighter who carries forward the lessons you taught.
We have the watch from here
