Former student linda Selima(now Linda Marie), has just recieved her black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Linda began karate in Andover under sensei Tom Wirtanen, Dick Walnik and Steve Klucki. She then found her way to the Sessa Kai dojo and Sensei Mike Pepe who offered jiu-jitsu classes once a week. She caught the BJJ bug and continued at Triumph BJJ in New Hampshire. Congratulations Linda!! A journey you can hang your hat on!!!

In 1996 Japanese masters of the martial arts came to Boston. From Kendo, Iaido, Kyudo, Bayonet, Shorin-ji Ryu to two sword style, Naginata and many more. I will post these demos in the coming weeks. Please enjoy these demonstrations. All who were introduced were Hanshi or Kyoshi.

We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of martial arts legend, Sensei Fumio Demura yesterday.

In the film industry, Fumio Demura was best known as Pat Morita's stunt double in the Karate Kid films, where his expertise was key to bringing the character of Mr. Miyagi to life. In the martial arts world, however, he was known for so much more. Sensei Demura was a well-established figure in Japanese karate; but his desire to spread the art extended beyond one country. In 1965, he moved to America and became one of the first true teachers in the United States of Sh*to-Ryu karate, as well as Okinawan kobudo. He taught and inspired thousands of students and served as a model of what a martial artist should strive to be, in training and in life.

Rest in Peace Sensei Fumio Demura. Your legacy will continue to live on.

Here's something to watch...
30 years ago in 1993 at a martial arts summer camp, I was introduced to the art of Kendo (see the photo). Played with my friends in my driveway that summer or two and decided to enter a tournament- which I won. I knew nothing about the hosting school however I figured out later, they were small, had a very high ranking Kendo expert from Korea here and were putting on a small "tournament" with their students. Unfortunately for them, they advertised in a flyer and I was the only "other" entrant.....
I'm wearing black and on the left- First match you'll watch 2 minutes of us gearing up and 4 minutes of my first match which I won. The second match I won by ippon in less than 30 seconds.!!! They had 3 entrants and 3 trophies..and I took their trophy. LOL. I'll discuss in the comments..ENJOY this Wonderful moment!!

No one is ever ready to hear the words “you have a cancerous mass” in your upper intestines, yet those were the words Sensei Jim and his wife Rosie heard on Jan. 19th, 2023.

After a successful surgery and follow-up at MGH, Sensei Jim will be receiving chemotherapy treatment for Diffuse Large B Cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His battle with cancer and resulting low immune system will keep him out of the dojo and out of work for some time.

Sensei Jim has shared his passion for martial arts with over ten thousand students ranging in age from 3 to 102 over the last 48 years. He embodies what he teaches: respect, compassion, focus, patience, courage, humility, wisdom, sincerity, and self-confidence. Should you not already know how much Jim means to the Waltham community, just ask one of his friends.

Sensei Jim has to put on his fighting gear and step into the ring again, this time to save his own life. The money raised will be used to help pay medical and living expenses.
