It’s Japanese Knotweed Season!

Have you noticed this plant in your yard? Japanese Knotweed (knotweed) is an invasive species in Massachusetts, and removing it is a huge help in preserving our healthy, native ecosystems!

How you dispose of it depends on the growth:
If there is a seedling, pull it out! Make sure to bag it for trash removal.
OR
If the plant is fully mature, you can try a few methods to eradicate it:

- Cutting (this can take up to five years to ensure that it is eradicated)
- Smothering (this can take up to five years to ensure that it is eradicated)
- Herbicide (this requires a licensed applicator and treatment plan)
- Have questions? Reach out to [email protected]

You can also check out the City's website to learn more about Knotweed and other invasive species in Watertown: www.watertown-ma.gov/1156/Invasive-Plants

Winter sowing seedling size and germination success rate can vary wildly!

Here is a peak at one gardener’s range of seedlings:

Some seedlings, like woodmint and coreopsis are already ready to go in the ground. They have more than two sets of true leaves.
Goldenrod had high germination rates, but they are still on the smaller side.
Meanwhile Monarda, or Beebalm, have a few strong looking seedlings.
And columbine has a small showing of only three seedlings.

Meanwhile, previous year’s plants are thriving and blooming in a woodland shade garden providing food for the ecosystem.

Join our transplanting event on June 28! More details on our website!

We were fortunate to have a lovely team of volunteers from last Thursday to help us work on the Watertown-Cambridge Greenway!

As part of ‘s annual Watertown Helps Out month of giving back, volunteers removed invasive plants such as garlic mustard, Japanese knotweed, and black swallow-wort. They also laid a wood chip border around the demonstration pollinator garden. Thanks again to the for the wood chips and picking up the trash bags after the event.

We have volunteer events throughout the season! Be sure to check them out, watertowngardens.org/events

If you winter sowed seeds this season, remember to open them up or even move them into a shady area for this hot sunny weekend! There will always be a variation in germination success, and size of seedlings. They will be ready to transplant when they have two sets of true leaves! 🌱
