Pope Leo XIV's homily at the Sagrada Família on June 10, 2026, centered on faith, peace, and the spiritual meaning of Antoni Gaudí's masterpiece. The Mass marked both the centenary of Gaudí's death and the blessing of the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ.

Main themes of the homily

1. Faith and violence are incompatible

Drawing on John's Gospel ("unless you believe that I am He"), Pope Leo stressed that authentic Christian faith cannot coexist with war, violence, or indifference to suffering. He declared that believers cannot claim faith in Christ while harming innocent people or ignoring those fleeing poverty and hardship.

2. The basilica as a "catechesis of stone, color, and light"

The Pope praised the Sagrada Família as more than an architectural achievement. He described it as a form of teaching the faith through beauty, symbolism, light, and structure—a place that helps people encounter Christ.

3. Unity in a divided world

Addressing civic and religious leaders, he said the basilica's open doors symbolize the Church's mission to gather people into one family around God's Word and the Eucharist. He presented the Church as a living structure built from many different "stones" united in Christ.

4. The unfinished church as a symbol of Christian life

Leo noted that, despite reaching a major milestone, the Sagrada Família remains under construction. He used this as an image for the Christian journey: God continually builds and perfects human lives, and believers are called to cooperate in that work.

5. Hope represented by the new Tower of Jesus Christ

The newly blessed tower, crowned by its illuminated cross, was presented as a sign of redemption, hope, and divine love visible over Barcelona. The Pope encouraged Christians not only to look upward toward Christ but also outward toward those who are marginalized and in need.

A representative passage

One of the most widely reported lines from the homily was:

"We cannot believe in Jesus and wage war."

MY WATERLOO DAYS PARADE

What a fantastic evening at the My Waterloo Days parade! This was our second time participating, and it was even more enjoyable than we remembered. We were incredibly fortunate to have 12 amazing cheerleaders from Columbus High School join us, along with eight dedicated St. Vincent de Paul volunteers. Together, they helped hand out more than 6,000 pieces of candy and spread plenty of smiles along the parade route.

The evening was absolutely wonderful. While it was a bit humid, the tall buildings provided welcome shade and made for a surprisingly comfortable and pleasant atmosphere. The streets were filled with energy, the crowds were enthusiastic, and the community spirit was on full display. We had an incredible time and are grateful to everyone who helped make the event such a memorable success!

Our 2025 Christmas Giveaway was a huge success!

The final tally is as follows: 172 families, serving 432 children for toys and gifts under 16; that's 172 family games, 432 books and stuffed animals, 2692 toys and stocking stuffers.

Food boxes for 213 families served 830 individuals.

Here's the number that your generosity made happen. A bag with 3 pr. of socks or underwear was given to every family member including those just receiving food boxes. 1,935 pr. of socks or underwear was given out.

St. Vincent's has the best volunteers and this Christmas season went so smoothly from sign-up to returning toys and boxes to Toys for Tots.

A big, heartfelt thank you from me, Therese, for making my job easier.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Walking with Our Neighbors: Stories of Need, Hope, and Compassion

St. Vincent de Paul brings joy to children and families at Christmas. Yet during the sign-up process, we are often entrusted with heartbreaking stories—moments when all we can give is hope.

A young mother of four, herself only in her mid-30s, shared how grateful she is for all that is done to make her family’s Christmas joyful. But she also confided that she lives with a brain aneurysm—a “ticking time bomb”—and a vascular condition. She asked, “Will I be here next Christmas for my husband and kids?” In moments like these, we are reminded that beyond gifts and meals, our presence, compassion, and hope matter deeply.

Two women living in their cars came asking only for Christmas food boxes. Through tears, they shared how shelters were full and they had nowhere to go. We were able to provide food, warm layers, and shared every bit of information we had about resources that might help them get off the streets. One quietly asked if there might be a gas card, just to start her car occasionally to keep warm.

As the Christmas giveaway was ending, a man quietly knocked on our door. He is an undocumented migrant, about 35, who left a good job in his home country hoping to bring his family to the U.S. Instead, he is trapped—sleeping in a garage, doing physical labor for a “boss” who charges him $700 a month in interest on the $15,000 loan from the "coyote" who brought him across the border. With no legal work opportunities, facing freezing Iowa temperatures and looking over his shoulder for ICE his future is dim. We gave him a food box and outdoor work clothes, and called Father Nils to see if any assistance could help him find a path out of this desperate situation.

These stories are difficult to hear, but they are the reality of the neighbors we serve—neighbors who are hungry, homeless, sick, and struggling in ways that statistics cannot fully capture. And yet, each encounter also reminds us of the power of small acts of kindness: listening, providing a meal, sharing warm clothing, offering guidance, and simply showing that someone sees them and cares.
