Dr. Janell Green Smith, 31, died from complications related to childbirth after welcoming her first child. The South Carolina nurse-midwife devoted her career to supporting mothers, promoting safer births, and advocating for respectful and equitable maternal care. ABC News 4

Known for her commitment to Black maternal health, Dr. Smith worked to protect families within a healthcare system she understood deeply. During her career, she reportedly helped deliver more than 200 babies, offering her knowledge, care, and reassurance during some of life’s most important moments.

Dr. Smith leaves behind her husband and newborn daughter. Her passing is a heartbreaking loss for her family, patients, and the wider midwifery community. Her legacy lives through the families she served and the urgent work she championed. Today, we remember Dr. Janell Green Smith as a healer, advocate, midwife, and mother.
