The Office of Advocacy and Support (OAS) is an irreplaceable, much-needed resource on our campus, especially now as the intersections of survivorship, racial injustice, and Covid-19 play out. We write this statement to reiterate the vital role that OAS plays on our campus. We want to ensure that OAS and it’s staff will remain on campus and be safe of layoffs in these times of financial stress.

SASA is centralizing its advocacy and resources to denounce police brutality and mobilize and support social movements, activists, and organizations that are actively fighting for Black liberation. Without the use of an intersectional framework and supporting movements such as BLM, our ability to support all survivors would be feasibly impossible.

New title IX changes make seeking justice even harder for survivors while expanding rights for perpetrators. See statement below.

While policy changes go into effect on August 14th, GW has the opportunity to help mitigate the consequences of the new changes, thus supporting survivors and showing that they do prioritize the well-being and safety of their students.

This is a student rights issue, our voices are powerful. Here’s what you can do:
Email the following accounts with a statement showing support for SASA’s recommendations and/or express your concerns with the changes and why GW must step up.

M. Brian Blake (Provost), mailto:[email protected]
Rory Muhammad (Director and Title IX Coordinator), mailto:[email protected]

This can be a very difficult and upsetting time for survivors. SASA is here to support and advocate for you.

We believe Tara Reade. Silencing survivors, regardless of circumstance, is never justified. We condemn the Time’s Up movement and corporate backed media outlets for refusing to listen to Tara Reade and dismissing her voice. We should not stand in solidarity with survivors only when it's comfortable to, we should do it even during times it's not. We applaud Tara Reade’s courage and thank her for coming forward with her story.

*cw: sexual assault, reporting processes*

SASA stands in solidarity with survivors and believes that supporting survivors should be a priority of the GW community.

A community where survivors feel supported, safe, and provided with resources for healing is a student right and is non-negotiable. Let’s listen to survivors—please take a moment to read this article.

For survivors, SASA is always here to listen, advocate, and support you.
