As all of us at Purdue know that the university is recognized worldwide as the Cradle of Astronauts because of its influence on the U.S. space program, specifically the 30 Boilermakers chosen to become astronauts. In 2027, Purdue will build on that legacy by having an all-Purdue crew on a Virgin Galactic suborbital flight called Purdue 1.

Purdue Extension is sponsoring the Purdue 1 Indiana Fifth-Grade Essay Competition with the College of Engineering and Office of Engagement. One winner from each Indiana county will be selected and receive a personalized Purdue 1 Indiana patch bearing the student’s name.

Judges selected by Purdue Extension 4-H Youth Development will evaluate essays on writing quality, creativity, critical thinking and connection to the competition theme.

Entries are being accepted until November 30, 2026. They may be submitted through students’ schools or by a parent or guardian.

Reminder: tomorrow, Tuesday October 6th at 7:00PM will be the 2026 Daviess County 4-H Achievement Night. The event will be held at the 4-H Exhibit Building at the 4-H Fairgrounds. At this event, we will recognize each of our 2026 Grand Champions, as well as name the winners of our 18 Achievement Awards. Members who won a Grand Champion in the Exhibit Building and selected a choice award will receive that prize on this night.

A few reminders as we are just a few days away from celebrating the achievements of our Daviess County 4-H members. On October 6th, from 7:00pm – 8:00pm will be the 2026 Daviess County 4-H Achievement Night. The event will be held at the 4-H Exhibit Building at the 4-H Fairgrounds.

At this event, we will recognize each of our 2026 Grand Champions, as well as name the winners of our 18 Achievement Awards. Members who won a Grand Champion in the Exhibit Building and selected a choice award will receive that prize on this night.

One last reminder: Consumer Protection & VITA Community Event

This event brings together Purdue Extension, Indiana Legal Services, IU Maurer School of Law, and Bloomington Public Library to connect community members with free, trusted resources related to taxes and consumer protection.

Throughout the event, participants will have access to information on Stay Scam Safe, Debt Collection – Your Rights, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), taxpayer rights and responsibilities, and legal assistance available through the ILS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). Limited one-on-one legal sessions will also be available for consumer and individual tax issues.

🌅 Good morning from Day 2 of the Leadership Daviess County Opening Retreat!

What a great first day at beautiful Pleasant Grove Farm! 🌿

Yesterday was filled with meaningful connections, team building, learning about the program, and diving into the county geography, learning more about the people, places, and stories that make Daviess County special.

We also enjoyed plenty of time to get to know one another outside of the classroom, with great food, a relaxing evening, a bonfire 🔥, lots of laughter, and conversations that helped strengthen our connections.

Today, we’re excited to continue the journey with more leadership development, including the Myers-Briggs and leadership theory, along with more opportunities to learn about ourselves, each other, and our community. A highlight will be closing the day with a historic time line created by the participants.
