The term "Tattoo" traces its roots back to the 17th century and the Dutch phrase doe den tap toe, or "turn off the tap".

Originally, it was the drum signal used to tell tavern owners to stop serving beer and for soldiers to return to their quarters. Over the centuries, that simple drum call evolved into the magnificent musical pageantry we see today.

The Washington Tattoo was honored to support America’s Ball for the Mall in partnership with the Trust for the National Mall.

As we move toward the 250th anniversary of our nation, we were proud to provide the historic military music and ceremony that have echoed through our American story.
