Our museum mourns the passing of a renowned Washington D.C. milliner, Vanilla Beane. Vanilla Beane was a warm and gentle person whose soft tone was evident in her handiwork, and her dramatic creations showcased her flare and personality.

Vanilla Beane made many different styles of hats over the years—cartwheel hats, tams, bonnets, and more. While some of her customers requested what she called “real fussy hats,” with lots of elaborate trim, Beane personally preferred simpler styles such as turbans. She will be best remembered for making grand, majestic, and memorable hats for noted civil rights icon, Dorothy I. Height.

Beane’s hat making story began early as the 1950s. By 1979, she opened her very own shop at 6217 3rd Street in Northwest Washington, D.C. called “Bené Millinery & Bridal Supplies.” The shop is still open and for her 100th birthday a few years ago, she proudly stood outside of her store waving to friends and family who drove by honking their horns in her honor.

Beane’s green velveteen on buckram turban-style hat is part of the Google 3-D interactive exhibition on display at our museum, and available to view at https://s.si.edu/3TtUyVH

Was so proud to see Ms Kitty recognized for all her outstanding contributions!

Catherine M. Borris is 2nd Vice President, membership chair, of the D.C. Chapter. She has been a member of the flagship chapter for many years where she also has served as treasurer and historian. She continues to dedicate her time and efforts as she serves to promote membership, retain the history and sustain the legacy of this great chapter. She is truly a jewel to the chapter and the entire organization.

Catherine, affectionately known as “Kitty” grew up in Spartanburg, SC, the youngest of 11 children. Growing up, she spent a lot of time with her father, Cheave McCracken who taught her to be resourceful, always identify your land marks, be respectful of the environment, be self-sufficient and always put family first. Her mother, Alma instilled in her the importance of a good education, how to manage a large household and most importantly how to cook. A lesson, she learned very well as she is known by her family and friends as an outstanding down home country chief.

Catherine attended Carver High School and was the first Black majorette to march down Main Street in the Spartanburg Annual Christmas Parade. After graduating from High School, and at the request of her older Sister, Edna, Catherine moved to DC and attended Morgan State University where she majored in and graduated with a BA in sociology.

Catherine’s family has been a member of Nativity Catholic Church since 1965. She and her family have a strong faith and she is active in several church ministries. In the early seventies, Kitty was one of the first female ushers at Nativity and among the first to serve as Eucharistic Minister in the Archdiocese, and board member for the Office of Black Catholics. Working as a social worker for D.C. Govt. she spent many years ensuing the underserved received the benefits they were entitled to. Kitty decided to let go of her career women life and became a stay at home mom for her kids and many of the neighborhood kids as well.

She has been a den mother, teacher’s assistant, and fund raiser for several charities and service organizations. She served on the Board for the Ionia R. Whipper Home for abused and neglected girls, the DC Youth Orchestra, Ki-Women of Shepard Park, and many others. NHBW, Inc - District of Columbia Chapter

In observance of Black History month, we are reminded of the struggles of freedom, the March to Washington, the many lynches, discrimination to those who have gone before us to pave the way to where we are today. We do not take it for granted that we have VP Kamala Harris in the White House; a potential selection of the first African-American woman to sit on the Supreme Court and people of color see the true meaning of voting to make a difference in our communtities and selective of who represent us making decisions on our behalf. We thank God for the Freedom Riders, those who didn't think twice about going to jail, those who sung songs of freedom while marching and at the many rallies that were held and all who gave their lives just so we can say, Happy Black History Month. It's time to celebrate because it's our month!!
