Was so proud to see Ms Kitty recognized for all her outstanding contributions!
Catherine M. Borris is 2nd Vice President, membership chair, of the D.C. Chapter. She has been a member of the flagship chapter for many years where she also has served as treasurer and historian. She continues to dedicate her time and efforts as she serves to promote membership, retain the history and sustain the legacy of this great chapter. She is truly a jewel to the chapter and the entire organization.
Catherine, affectionately known as “Kitty” grew up in Spartanburg, SC, the youngest of 11 children. Growing up, she spent a lot of time with her father, Cheave McCracken who taught her to be resourceful, always identify your land marks, be respectful of the environment, be self-sufficient and always put family first. Her mother, Alma instilled in her the importance of a good education, how to manage a large household and most importantly how to cook. A lesson, she learned very well as she is known by her family and friends as an outstanding down home country chief.
Catherine attended Carver High School and was the first Black majorette to march down Main Street in the Spartanburg Annual Christmas Parade. After graduating from High School, and at the request of her older Sister, Edna, Catherine moved to DC and attended Morgan State University where she majored in and graduated with a BA in sociology.
Catherine’s family has been a member of Nativity Catholic Church since 1965. She and her family have a strong faith and she is active in several church ministries. In the early seventies, Kitty was one of the first female ushers at Nativity and among the first to serve as Eucharistic Minister in the Archdiocese, and board member for the Office of Black Catholics. Working as a social worker for D.C. Govt. she spent many years ensuing the underserved received the benefits they were entitled to. Kitty decided to let go of her career women life and became a stay at home mom for her kids and many of the neighborhood kids as well.
She has been a den mother, teacher’s assistant, and fund raiser for several charities and service organizations. She served on the Board for the Ionia R. Whipper Home for abused and neglected girls, the DC Youth Orchestra, Ki-Women of Shepard Park, and many others. NHBW, Inc - District of Columbia Chapter
