500 Year Mystery of Turkish Red Finally Solved!

One of the most significant words exported by the Turks to the world is "Turkish Red." This unique dyeing method, which gained worldwide fame starting in the 16th century, has remained a well-guarded secret for nearly 500 years.

Samples preserved in the Topkapı Palace Museum and the Military Museum in Harbiye have been analyzed, along with 19th-century catalogues of Turkish Red found in the archives of the University of Glasgow. Multi-analytical methodswere used during this research. The founder of the Turkish Cultural Foundation and its financier, businessman and scientist Dr. Yalçın Ayaslı has provided all kinds of material and moral support to accurately research this important heritage and bring it to the present day.

All research within the scope of the project was conducted by DATU (Cultural Heritage and Natural Dyes Laboratory), and the Turkish Red formula has been patented under the registration number TR 2015 00638 B. The rediscovered Turkish Red formula has been adapted for both traditional and industrial production and reintegrated into the Turkish textile industry.
