Wilderness areas 🤝 national parks.

Of all the lands managed by the National Park Service, over 80% have wilderness characteristics and could be negatively impacted by a new order from the Interior Department. NPS is responsible for managing more wilderness acreage than any other public land agency - and this call to weaken Directors Order 41 could upend decades of established wilderness stewardship.

“This administration’s order threatens to upend the bipartisan tradition of protecting wilderness areas at the highest level." - NPCA President and CEO Tiernan Sittenfeld

Our national parks deserve to function at their best – and that’s why we’re on the ground in Hot Springs National Park to support the Great American Outdoors Act 250!

This bill ensures substantial federal funding to fix the deferred maintenance backlog in our park (it’s reached more than $23 billion!). Passing this bill is a critical step in addressing our parks’ crumbling roads, decaying buildings, outdated drinking and wastewater systems, and many more critical repair needs.

It costs how much?? 🤯

Ignoring the laws designed to protect the National Mall and national parks that belong to all Americans doesn't sound like celebrating 250 years of America to us. ❌

Tiernan Sittenfeld, NPCA's CEO and president, shares why Stonewall National Monument matters now, more than ever, to her and to Americans everywhere. Happy 10 years of Stonewall National Monument! 🌈 🎉

NPCA, Association of National Park Rangers, the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks, the American Association for State and Local History, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the Society for Experiential Graphic Design, represented by Democracy Forward, filed a lawsuit in March to stop the administration from erasing history and science from the national park experience.

Fix our parks! 🔨 🔧 With the introduction of the Great American Outdoors Act 250 in the House, Congress is one step closer to tackling long-overdue repair needs in our national parks. We applaud this bipartisan effort to extend critical maintenance funding for national parks and public lands across the country! 👏

“Dedicated maintenance funding has supported hundreds of critical repairs, improved safety and visitor experiences and strengthened local economies across the country. But that progress is at risk. Repair needs continue to grow while the Park Service has lost nearly a quarter of its workforce since January 2025. Without sustained funding and staffing, our parks risk falling further behind." - Tiernan Sittenfeld, NPCA President and CEO.

Several signs at Bunker Hill monument have been flagged for removal including signs about slavery, immigrants and war memorials

“As Americans, we rely on our national parks to help us understand the stories of our past and their relevance to our present-day struggles. Bunker Hill tells the story of our fight for democracy and for the rights of all people to be free. It continues to be a place where people gather in protest and celebration still today. Censoring the contributions of any people that came before us would go against the very ideals that were fought for at this place. Our national parks belong to all of us. Visitors deserve the chance to learn our struggles and triumphs alike, free of government censorship." - Kristen Sykes, NPCA.

Grand Staircase-Escalante is in jeopardy - and what happens next could have major implications for all national monuments.

Members of Congress want to throw out the monument’s recently completed management plan. If overturned, it would create immediate uncertainty for the future of the monument’s 1.9 million acres, the surrounding national parks, and the people and wildlife who depend on this landscape. ⚠️

Other national parks like the Grand Canyon, Canyonlands and Joshua Tree also rely on the national monuments that border them to protect the connected landscapes. Grand Staircase-Escalante and national monuments nationwide must continue to be managed through a thoughtful, public, science-driven process. We need Congress to vote ❌ NO ❌ on H.J. Res.151 and S.J. Res.109 so Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument - and all national monuments - have continued protection.
