Today's there is Nothing About Us Without Us- acknowledging that deaf people must be at the center of all decisions that affect their lives. ⁠

This year, International Week of Deaf people celebrates 75 years of human rights. The World Federation of the Deaf was founded in 1951, on the belief that people everywhere should enjoy full human rights. ⁠

Today, ULS strives to promote accessibility and equal rights within DC, providing access to assistive technology as well as legal and housing resources for District residents. ⁠

The Help America Vote Act (HAVA) requires full, barrier-free access to polling places to enable people with disabilities to cast their votes privately.⁠
⁠
If you have a disability, you have the right to vote at an actual polling site, and there are a number of accessible options available at vote centers. ⁠

Disability Rights DC provided testimony urging the DC City Council to ensure autonomous vehicle (AV) companies provide accessible transportation for all. ⁠
⁠
A bill (B26-0684) has been proposed that will AV companies to provide passenger service in DC. While this has the potential to expand transportation opportunities for disabilities, AVs are not always accessible to disabled riders. ⁠
⁠
While Waymo does have wheelchair-accessible cars available, none have an automated wheelchair securement system. This means that wheelchair uses cannot independently use Waymo- they must be traveling with another person who can assist them.⁠

NPR published a powerful story about Cody and Kaleigh Brendle, two siblings from New Jersey who are both blind. The siblings are part of the "ADA generation"- people who came under the age of the safeguards for the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Now, the integration mandate and the entire system of community-based disability services (serving over 8 million Americans) is being challenged in federal court.

This week, City Cast DC published a story on the abysmally low pickup rates of the District's Su***de Lifeline. This article reveals that DC has one of the nation's lowest pickup rates- at one point this year, just 56% of calls were picked up by local crisis counselors. ⁠
⁠
These low rates are a result of chronic understaffing at DC's Department of Behavioral Health, which runs the crisis call center. This can undermine the purpose of the 988 system.⁠
