Access Housing Inc. DC

Access Housing Inc. DC AHI operates the Southeast Veterans Service Center and the Chesapeake Veterans House for homeless veterans (both men and women) in SE DC.

The center offers residents a safe, clean and sober village-like setting for a duration of several months to one year, depending upon individual need. The program was originally formulated as a social model and is now integrated with structured case management and mental health therapy. Accordingly, it addresses addiction, mental health problems, PTSD, medical needs, family issues, housing, and em

ployment training and placement. This three-phase multi-service approach includes: Recovery Services, Employment Development, and Community Reintegration; Abstinence, following a 12-Step model; and community participation, all of which is intended to nurture individual strength and pride. The program’s goal is full-time employment, independence, and reintegration into the Washington DC community. AHI seeks to ensure each veteran has a home and employment upon leaving the program.

Assistant Director Goodson, your transition to Texas is not a departure—it is an expansion of your impact and a continuation of a mission rooted in service, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to those who have worn the uniform of this nation.

Throughout your time with the Howard University Office of Military & Veteran Services, you have been a force of compassion and action—bridging gaps, uplifting veterans, and ensuring that no service member is without resources, advocacy, a listening ear, or the respect they deserve.

Your work has never been confined to a single place. It has always been about people—the veteran navigating transition and the community learning how to stand beside them. As you carry this purpose to Texas, you bring not only your expertise, but the spirit of partnership that has defined your leadership.

From the Access Housing Inc. D.C. team: your presence will be deeply missed, but your influence will remain embedded in the lives you’ve touched and the systems you’ve strengthened. You leave behind not a gap, but a legacy—one that challenges us all to continue this work with the same passion and excellence you have exemplified.

Wishing you continued success on this next chapter—we know your impact will be just as powerful in Texas. 💙

Honored to be part of an evening that celebrated legacy, leadership, and lasting impact in our community

At the DAR Gala, we had the privilege to have our Chief Operating Officer, Clifton Lewis, highlight the vital work of Access Housing Inc. D.C.—a program that has been serving veterans since 1985. From providing transitional (short-term) housing to advancing pathways toward permanent, stable housing, we remain committed to ensuring that veterans in the DMV area have a safe place to call home.

We’re especially excited to share that two of our buildings have been selected for renovations—transforming into updated, long-term housing solutions that will serve veterans for years to come.

The evening also recognized remarkable leadership, including Regent Liser’s historic tenure and continued investment in education and community through the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University.

Together, we honor the past while building a stronger future for those who have served.
