Artistic Approach to DocuFiction
In the world of media, good storytelling is the gold standard when producing valuable and sustainable content. However, in creating content (film, TV, internet shows, etc.), there has been a perceived difference in form and structure of Documentary (non-fiction) and Narrative Films (fiction). Until recently, Documentary films were perceived as a niche genre, for people who want to be educated. In recent years, there has been a re-evaluation, in part because of the pandemic. This surge in popularity if docs is due to two factors: 1) Documentaries are now turning into series, and 2) They often blend narrative film cinematography styles, soundscapes, and editing preferences to capture their audience's attention. From docuseries to the ever-popular "reality" TV/competition shows, there isn't a moment that audiences aren't introduced to a new cast of characters to get attached to and live through vicariously.
In "The Artistic Approach to Docufiction," Filmmaker and Entrepreneur Michael Anthony will investigate the hybrid, genre-defying content that questions traditional intentions of Documentary and Fiction; and how they are better together for some stories. When it comes down to it, filmmaking is the most collaborative art form ever created, so why box it in with techniques and practices that only one art form is supposed to use? It's time to interrogate these traditions to tell stories in more authentic, meaningful, and entertaining ways. When it comes down to it, your story can be the greatest one ever told, but if it is boring, no one will watch it. Docufiction explores that emotional and truth-seeking rollercoaster craved by audiences.
