Shelters and rescues across the country take in animals who have survived some of the worst circumstances— cruelty, neglect, abandonment. The care these animals need is often complex and expensive. Emergency surgery. Rehabilitation. Diagnostics that take weeks.

Most organizations absorb that cost quietly, because the alternative is unthinkable.

Our Second Chance® Grant program exists to help carry that weight. We provide direct financial assistance to qualifying 501(c)(3) shelters and rescues to help offset the medical costs of animals who have survived abuse or neglect — so that decisions about care aren't made based on a budget.

Today, we remember Dayo, our 2024 Therapy Hero Dog finalist, and a shining light in the Hero Dog Awards family who crossed the rainbow bridge. 🌈 🐾

"You were never 'just a dog.' You were family. You were a true hero." – Dayo's family

For eight and a half years, Dayo served with quiet strength, bringing comfort to children and adults fighting cancer, children awaiting heart transplants, and the patients, families and staff at George Mark Children's House.

Dayo's legacy will live on through his family and his canine siblings Chloe, Cecil, Nala, Lucy and Raina. Thank you for letting American Humane Society be a small part of his journey.
