Wildfires should not be used to justify repression

The Algerian government has not shared comprehensive figures of deaths and injuries from the fires. Official government figures on 26 August recorded 12 deaths and 54 hospitalizations, but credible sources have since reported significantly higher casualties, including over 70 deaths in a single municipality. In July, separate wildfires killed six people also in the northeast. While authorities linked the July fires to a severe heatwave and previously described wildfires as a major risk and structural challenge exacerbated by climate change, in August, the Algerian president pointed to the responsibility of criminal elements “attempting to weaken Algeria and undermine its unity”.

Algeria’s authorities must immediately abandon any plans to expand the scope of the death penalty or resume executions after more than three decades without carrying one out, said Amnesty International as the government examines amendments to the penal code that would broaden the use of the deat.....

Tamazight Moussaoui, a teacher of Tamazight language from Tuvert province, has been arrested by the Algerian police for expressing her opinion on facebook about the legislative elections held last July.

Tamazight was known for her cultural and social involvement in Kabylian society by being active on social media.
She’s arbitrarily detained, and risks 2 years imprisonment, the verdict will be pronounced on September 22, 2026.

KHR organization is very alarmed about targeting citizens who peacefully express their views, which is a fundamental human right. It requests her immediate and unconditional release.

And yet the State's first response was not to examine its own failures. No independent investigation into the deaths has been announced. On 30 and 31 August, the authorities announced instead the death penalty for arson and a forthcoming law restricting habitation in forested areas, presented as a fire-protection measure. KHR’S ORGANIZATION CONDOLEANCES to AREZQI VUZEFRAN’S FAMILY

It is with deep sadness that we learn of the death of Aṛezqi Vuzefran (Aṛezqi At Zmenzar)— former president of Human Rights Defense in Kabylia ( HRDK), who was buried couple days ago in his native village of Iɣil n Lmal (At Zmenzar), in accordance with his last wishes.

His legacy will remain of a man of conviction, integrity and commitment to his people.

The pain and sorrow of his family are all the greater because it could not accompany him to his final resting because of its active involvement in politics.

Kabyle for Human Rights (KHR) offers its sincere condolences to his wife, children, his entire family and the inhabitants of his village of Iɣil n Lmal (At Zmenzar).
