Hundreds of manatees (Trichechus manatus) huddled together this week at Three Sisters Springs, a warm-water refuge in Crystal River, Florida. To avoid the stress of cold that can be fatal for manatees, they often leave the cool waters of the Gulf of Mexico at this time of year and flock to warmer rivers and springs.
