Census Consultation TODAY - The Future of Tribal Representation and Federal Funding is at Stake.

How Indian Country is counted matters. Proposed changes to the 2030 Census would remove race and ethnicity questions, threatening critical data about American Indian and Alaska Native populations that help inform federal funding for housing, health, transportation, and community development.

URGENT: Tribal Nations are encouraged to review proposed changes to the 2030 Census and make their voices heard.
The U.S. Census Bureau has proposed regulations that would fundamentally change how the census counts people across the United States. Of particular concern, the proposed rule would remove race and ethnicity questions, eliminating critical data about American Indian and Alaska Native populations.

Census data help determine political representation, inform federal funding decisions, and guide planning for housing, community development, maternal health, transportation, and other essential programs and services. These proposed changes could have significant consequences for Tribal Nations and Native communities.

The Census Bureau will hold a virtual Tribal consultation for Tribal leaders and officially designated representatives:

The public comment deadline is October 13. Tribal Nations and Tribal-serving organizations have until November 2 to submit comments.

NCAI is closely monitoring the federal court order temporarily restricting the United States Postal Service from implementing its newly finalized mail ballot rule ahead of the November elections.

If implemented, the rule could create additional barriers for American Indian and Alaska Native voters—particularly those in rural Tribal communities that rely on nontraditional addressing systems and face limited internet access and unreliable postal services.

“Voting by mail ensures access to the polls and is the only feasible option in many rural Tribal communities,” said NCAI Executive Director Larry Wright Jr.

NCAI continues to call for meaningful Tribal consultation and urges the administration to prevent last-minute changes that could confuse, create administrative challenges, and disenfranchise Native voters.
