A local look - human trafficking and youth risk factors in the state of Texas.

This is why we're piloting our prevention programs close to home first, with cohorts in Houston and Galveston in early 2024.

‍
Youth who are not enrolled in school; are experiencing homelessness, foster care, or unemployment; or identify as a person of color, LGBTQIA+, non-binary, or gender non-confirming are at greatest risk of trafficking.

If you are a community leader who engages, mentors, or provides case management for youth groups experiencing these vulnerabilities, contact [email protected] to get started on bringing the YEP experience to them.

Research shows that human trafficking is best fought through prevention. We're thrilled to announce that the Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) is officially launching its first cohort this month!

YEP is designed to strengthen our most vulnerable community members through a trauma-informed, emotionally intelligent, and empowering work readiness and placement experience offered to at-risk youth ages 14-24 in the Houston, Texas area.

We provide six weeks of hybrid coaching through the essentials of work readiness and professionalism followed by a career fair curated towards the cohort's interests where participants will test their soft-skills and interviewing. We will assist participants in securing paid employment for the next six weeks maintaining mentorship in parallel.

When young community members are equipped with gainful employment and the skills for self-reliance, the risk of human trafficking decreases.

One in five victims of human trafficking are children exploited for child labor, po*******hy, and begging.

There are numerous circumstances that contribute to youth involvement. Emotional or financial distress, familial exploitation, homelessness, manipulative third parties, and more can be found at the root of these statistics and of many children's experiences.

Human trafficking is happening here. The United States ranks as one of the worst countries in the world for it, with an estimated 199,900 occurrences annually.

Since 2020, MiCreate has supported survivors pursuing recovery, independence, and entrepreneurship through their creative talents. Now, in addition to survivor protection, we're adding a focus: prevention.

A new year inspires resolution. If one of yours is education, allyship, or action, it won't take long to discover how human trafficking is inherently connected to nearly all other social justice issues.

As President Biden shared in his 2022 Proclamation, “Since human trafficking disproportionately impacts racial and ethnic minorities, women and girls, LGBTQI+ individuals, vulnerable migrants, and other historically marginalized and underserved communities, our mission to combat human trafficking must always be connected to our broader efforts to advance equity and justice across our society.”

We all have a stake in this, and we can work together to make a difference. Our 2024 resolutions are to empower more survivor creatives and create more prevention-based programs. Keep up with our progress throughout the year right here.

What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking is defined in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 as a crime involving exploitation for the purpose of compelled labor or commercial s*x through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. Also known as modern day slavery, human trafficking impacts adults, children, men, women, foreign nationals and U.S. citizens, and all economic classes.

Understanding labor trafficking, adult s*x trafficking, and child s*x trafficking can help you recognize it, prevent it, or ask for help.

Human trafficking can be happening across the world, but it can also be happening across the street.

Do you know what it is? Would you recognize the signs?

January has been declared National Slavery & Human Trafficking Prevention Month by presidential proclamation each year since 2010. With the intention of raising the profile of the issue both domestically and internationally, the awareness month is a springboard for trafficking education, policy, and advocacy.
