Our starting focus is on HBCUs and Tribal Colleges and their students.

SFI is a 501(c)3 that aims to increase the social and economic mobility of students of color, providing them catalysts for freedom in individual career and life choices.

Today marked a major milestone for HBCU AWAREFEST.

Our President & CEO, Keith Shoates, took the movement to the Georgia State Senate, where a resolution was officially passed declaring March 26 as HBCU Awarefest Day in the state of Georgia.

This recognition speaks to the impact AWAREFEST continues to have in creating access, opportunity, and meaningful connections for HBCU students and communities. From the AUC to the Capitol, this work is being seen, felt, and supported at every level.

This Black History Month, we’re reflecting on the legacy of voices like Oprah Winfrey, who have long emphasized ownership, knowledge, and financial empowerment as tools for freedom.

Today, a new generation is building on that foundation asking smarter questions, seeking access, and redefining what financial independence can look like.

At Student Freedom Initiative, we believe curiosity is the starting point but access, resources, and opportunity are what turn those questions into real outcomes.

Congratulations to Dr. Charlie Hill on his historic $1.5 million gift to Virginia State University, the largest contribution ever made by a living alumnus.

This extraordinary investment is more than a milestone, it’s a powerful statement about legacy, leadership, and belief in the future of HBCU excellence. Through his continued support, Dr. Hill is helping expand academic opportunities, strengthen student success, and ensure that VSU continues to thrive for generations to come.

From his service on the Board of Visitors to establishing the Annase Wilks Hill Minerva Circle endowment in honor of his late wife, Dr. Hill’s commitment has been both personal and impactful, especially in supporting women in STEM.

We extend our heartfelt prayers and support to the Shaw University community as they recover from the recent accidental electrical fire on campus. Our hearts are especially with the 140 students who have been suddenly displaced and are now facing uncertainty about where they will live and how they will finish the semester.

We know that stable housing is essential to student success. Research shows that when students are unable to remain in on-campus housing, they are less likely to persist and complete their degree (Source: Inside Higher Ed).

At Student Freedom Initiative, we believe every student deserves the support they need to stay on track. That’s why we are raising funds to assist Shaw University students impacted by this fire. Through SFI’s micro-grant program, we are ready to provide immediate emergency relief to help students navigate this unexpected hardship and continue toward graduation.

Those who wish to help can donate by texting SHAWFIRE to 44-321. 100% of funds will go directly to Shaw University to support impacted students and help them complete the semester.

Madam C.J. Walker didn’t just build a business. She built a blueprint for Black wealth.

As one of the first self-made female millionaires in the U.S., Walker transformed haircare into an economic engine, creating jobs, ownership opportunities, and financial independence for thousands of Black women at a time when access to capital was nearly nonexistent.

Her legacy reminds us that wealth has always been built through vision, resilience, and community. Entrepreneurship wasn’t just about profit. It was about power, dignity, and creating pathways for others.

That spirit of ownership and opportunity continues today, carried forward by students, institutions, and leaders shaping what’s next.
