Here are some great tips for those of us in rural areas who may encounter farm equipment on roadways this planting season!

PLAN AHEAD. If you know the route to your destination includes farm territory, leave a little early so you have extra time and don’t feel so rushed.

SLOW DOWN. Farm vehicles move slowly. They may be just coming out of one field and already preparing to turn into another. To be safe, maintain a 50-foot “cushion” between your vehicle and the equipment.

YIELD. Please give farm equipment the right-of-way when meeting it on the road. Tractors and sprayers do a great job in the wide-open field, but they weren’t designed to navigate the narrow roads found in rural Kentucky.

PASS CAREFULLY. Country roads are often narrow, curvy and hilly. Be sure you can see a reasonable distance ahead before you consider passing slow-moving equipment, and keep an eye on the driver of that equipment. He or she will use signals when possible, but there may not always be flashing lights. Watch for hand signals in addition to blinkers.

TAKE A SECOND LOOK. Before you pull into an intersection or make a move to pass, be sure your path is clear in all directions.

BE PATIENT. Zipping around slow-moving equipment is dangerous, and the possibility of shaving a few minutes off your arrival time isn’t worth risking your life or the lives of others.

Farm equipment has just as much right to use public roadways as other motor vehicles. Extra-wide farm machinery may have to take up more than one lane...it can’t be helped, and the operator is dodging mailboxes and road signs. You may not be able to see around the equipment to pass. If you are meeting equipment, the driver will certainly appreciate you pulling off to the side if possible. Farmers try to be mindful of traffic building up behind them, and when it is safe to do so, will often pull over to let passenger vehicles around them.
Remember...the person driving that equipment is someone’s mom or dad, husband or wife, someone’s son or daughter, and they want to get home to their family safely every night just as much as you do!

🌱 Thank You, Gallatin County! 🌱
Gallatin County Conservation District held its annual Tree Seedling Giveaway on Saturday, April 18th as part of our ongoing effort to support local conservation and encourage community tree planting.
We were blown away by the turnout. More than 500 tree seedlings across seven different varieties found new homes! You kept us so busy we didn’t even get a chance to take many photos. If you joined us and snapped a few pictures of your family planting your seedlings, we’d love to see them. Feel free to share them in the comments.
Why it matters: Every seedling planted helps strengthen our local tree population, improve air and water quality, support wildlife habitat, and help our future generations. Small actions add up and Saturday showed just how much our community cares about the environment.
Special thanks to: Gallatin County Extension Office for the use of their breezeway, it was a true blessing in the rain • David Hull for creating and placing event signs • Chelsea Young for posting the event on their digital sign • Board members Vic Satchwell and Emily Epifanio • Soil Conservation Technician, Pat Underwood and volunteers Ashton Baxter and Kenny Vaughn
This is an annual event, and we hope to see you again next spring.
If you stopped by on Saturday, we’d love to know how you heard about the event; flyer, Facebook, newspaper, or word of mouth. Your feedback helps us grow!
🌳 Thank you for making this year’s giveaway such a success. Together, we’re planting a healthier future for Gallatin County.

What an amazing night! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Gallatin County Conservation District’s annual Arts & Writing Banquet. We loved celebrating our talented K–12 students and their conservation themed artwork and essays.
Our district winners, Grace Berkshire (poster) and Jace Epifanio (essay), went on to represent Gallatin County at the state competition, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.
