Our Crayon collection boxes have been receiving crayons this week! We are so excited to see that people are willing to help donate old or unwanted crayons. One person thought our box was for food collection, and kindly donated two bags full of dry goods. Two of our Girl Scouts brought the donations to the YMCA free little food pantry in Waltham. The girls checked the entire pantry for expired items before adding the new ones. We are collecting crayons until May 30 at the exits of Market Basket, Shaws, and Star Market. Thank you!!

We have started our Silver Award Project! We are collecting crayons to recycle. Crayons do not break down easily in landfills because they are made of wax, which comes from oil. Unlike food or paper, wax does not rot or decompose quickly. This means that when crayons are thrown away, they can sit in landfills for hundreds of years without breaking down. Over time, the wax can mix with soil and water, which might be bad for the environment. The dyes used in crayons could also add to pollution, making it even more harmful.
To help reduce waste, many people choose to recycle old crayons instead of throwing them away. Some programs melt down broken crayons and reshape them into new ones that can be used again. Others donate gently used crayons to schools, hospitals, or art programs so they don’t end up in the trash. By recycling and reusing crayons, we can help keep landfills from filling up and protect the environment.
