Waltham Educators Association Co-President Nate Rono endorses John Sullivan for MTA President and Gayle Carvalho for MTA Vice President (John and Gayle for MTA). Read Nate's full endorsement here.

As the president of his local, John has been a tireless advocate for his members, but more importantly, he has unified and strengthened his union in a very visible and impressive way. As a Belmont resident, I can attest that John has awakened a sleeping giant and that in the face of a very anti-teacher school committee and board of selectmen, Belmont educators have been a show of force to be reckoned with. I have attended several of Belmont’s rallies and I have always been struck by the strong showing of teachers, parents, students and community leaders who are raising their voices to support Belmont educators. Behind all of these efforts, John has been a stable, organizing and insistent presence.

John has also been an effective leader for the MTA regionally, holding regular meetings with Region G presidents, sharing important updates about MTA’s activities state-wide and bringing out concerns back to leadership.

Finally, John and Gayle are extremely supportive of ALL locals across the state. Whenever they are able, they have been shown up with their members to support the efforts of other locals in their region. In Waltham, John and Gayle have shown up for our early morning standouts to support immigrant rights as well as oat our rally to support our bargaining team at negotiations. This kind of support form your neighbor means so much and speaks volumes about their dedication.

Having known John and Gayle for many years now, I know that they would make a great team for the MTA, and I strongly endorse John Sullivan for President and Gayle Carvalho for Vice President.

From their GoFundMe page: Jillian and Russ Sorin are not only our friends and coworkers, but also dedicated Waltham High School teachers, parents to past and future Waltham students, small business owners, and truly amazing members of our community. They have always been the first to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, showing kindness and generosity to everyone around them. Now, they are facing an unimaginable challenge after their family home caught on fire, and they are left to pick up the pieces. Their beloved dog, Teegan, was also in the house during the fire and is now in need of urgent veterinary care.

At first, Jillian and Russ were reluctant to accept the community’s support, but with the overwhelming number of people seeking ways to help, this seemed like the most streamlined way to financially help them.

The funds raised through this campaign will help Jillian and Russ begin to replace all that was lost in the fire, cover the unexpected vet bills for their dog Teegan, and start the long process of rebuilding their life and home. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference as they work to recover from this tragedy.

Jillian and Russ have always been there for others, and I know our community will come together to support them now when they need it most. Please consider donating and/or sharing this fundraiser to help them get back on their feet. Your kindness and support will mean the world to them as they begin to rebuild.

The Waltham Educators Association are aware of concerns about the elimination of sheltered English immersion (SEI) classes and the reduction of ESL staff. In response to the district’s unilateral decision, the high school ESL department wrote a letter to the School Committee expressing their concerns. Their main points are as follows:

- Lack of transparency and staff input in the decision-making process.

- ELLs and their families were not informed or consulted.

- No clear, research-based plan for implementing the changes or ensuring compliance with ESL programming guidelines.

- The importance of retaining ESL staff during this significant instructional shift.

75 Waltham High School educators signed a letter to the School Committee, with 20 more educators wishing to sign but did not in fear of retaliation. Swipe to read more excepts from our letter to School Committee.

🪧 Thank you to everybody who attended today’s rally at the Middlesex courthouse where WEA members joined dozens of others standing in support of our immigrant students and their families.
