🎓 The Descendants Project is proud to announce the recipients of our 2026 Voices of the River Parishes Scholarship.

Please join us in congratulating:

E'Miray Fletcher
Graduate of West St. John High School
Attending Southeastern Louisiana University

Evanne Robertson
Graduate of East St. John High School
Attending Louisiana State University

This scholarship was created to uplift graduating seniors who demonstrate leadership, community engagement, and a commitment to the future of St. John Parish through topics including environmental justice, cultural preservation, youth leadership, and community advocacy.

We were deeply inspired by the thoughtfulness, passion, and vision shown through their essays and applications. We are excited to support these students as they begin their next chapter and continue growing into the leaders our communities need.

Congratulations again to E'Miray and Evanne on this well-deserved accomplishment!

At The Fight for Black Futures, our Co-Founder and Co-Director Jo Banner reflected on how the history of enslaved people in the River Parishes and the erasure of Black stories, records, and land ownership helped shape her journey and the mission of The Descendants Project. Through preserving descendant stories, protecting sacred land and burial grounds, and uplifting community history, we continue the fight to ensure our ancestors and future generations are never erased. 🤎

Last night’s The Fight for Black Futures event in New Orleans was a powerful evening of conversation, community, and vision for the future.

We are proud of our Co-Founder and Co-Director Jo Banner for joining incredible women leaders Andrea Armstrong and Gia Hamilton for important conversations around protecting Black history, land, culture, and community stories. Special thank you to Shennette Garrett-Scott for moderating such a thoughtful and engaging panel discussion, and to Who Owns Black Data and the Amistad Research Center for bringing this impactful event together.
