Walker Missouri Lending Library

Three years ago, the Walker City Clerk (who happens to be my sister 😁) invited me to help restore the original free lending library in the park. After a good cleaning, a wasp eviction and a few handygirl repairs, we reopened the box with a specially curated selection of books from the Friends of the Olathe Public Library.

It would soon become evident that keeping our donated books safe and dry would require a major overhaul and thus, our current lending library was born!

We will forever be grateful to our friends, neighbors and communities for helping us build and sustain our library but are always mindful that it wouldn’t have happened had it not been for the original!!!

Built as a service leadership project by a member of the Walker 4-H, it sent countless books out into the world and was an incredible resource that not many communities the size of Walker have!! Our gratitude to the “original” library and the people who made it possible!!

Some of my favorite young readers reminding you that reading just 3-4 hours a week can prevent the “Summer Slide”……where reading proficiency drops up to 20% of school year gains! And, a summer reading program of at least 5 weeks can result in gains equivalent to an additional month of school!! 😁

Hey!!! Did you know there are 4 slides in the Walker City Park? Well, now you do!! 🛝🛝🛝🛝

Plan a visit to the free lending library in the Walker city park to keep up your kid’s reading skills over the summer! While you’re there, enjoy a slide, or two (or three or four!!) and send us your best summer slide pics!!

I caught the books in the Walker Lending Library talking strategy on how to get you to take them with you on your summer vacation!! 😊

Just a reminder…..books make a great distraction for kids (and adults) during long car rides, are fantastic for relaxing pool or beach side, and are the best for having an adventure without leaving home!!

As you make your plans, be sure to include a stop in the Walker city park to grab a book or two to enjoy!!! (You won’t even need space to pack them, just carry them right with you!!!)

Sharing this wonderful milestone by our friends and mentors at the Little Ladybug Library. For those that don’t know, the boxes that Bruce used to design our library were actually the toddler annexes of the Little Ladybug before it was upgraded to a bigger version!! We have been so blessed by this friendship, as they have helped us with all our little projects-including donations for our own library, our Amelia Bedelia BOLO and the ElDorado Springs PTO Jingle Jamboree book gifts!!

Congratulations on surpassing 1000 followers and thank you for all you’ve done for our communities!!!

We are a little overdue on this “Thankful Thursday” post…..but it’s never too late to share a wonderful kindness story!!

Last fall, we received a generous donation of books for the library from a friend in Walker. Among the goodies was a set of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ books. They have been in our refill supply since, waiting for space to add them.

A few weeks ago, a mother posted in my neighborhood ‘Free Give/Take’ Facebook group, looking for books for her older children, specifically mentioning (you guessed it)…….’Diary of a Wimpy Kid’!!! She and I were able to connect and I gave her the set!!! Needless to say, she was thrilled!!!

Helping connect people and books doesn’t always mean a visit to our library box (although that’s a great way to do it!) but it almost always means a kind and generous deed!! Many (many) thanks to our donors for the continued support and for letting us be a link in gifting books to our friends, neighbors and communities!!

Was a little overwhelmed last week and didn’t get my ‘Thankful Thursday’ post added......so you are getting a ‘Missed It Monday’!!! 😊

We received an incredibly generous donation of children’s books from some new friends in the Eldo community!! As an added bonus, a long time supporter was so very kind to go pick them up for us!!!

We have a lot of patrons who bring their grandchildren to the library and having a great selection of books for our youngest to enjoy is especially fun! We are so grateful for our communities, neighbors and friends who donate, support and make our free lending library possible!!

This crazy weather week is a perfect excuse (not that we need one) to post a gratitude for the incredible support of our library community! From our design and build team, who took our generously donated book boxes and built/installed a strong, sturdy place for us (thank you Phil, Bruce, Mason, and the Nevada Elks Lodge) to our neighbors, friends and family who tidy, clean and refill the library for us!! Keeping our donations safe, clean and dry is no small effort and we are incredibly thankful for everything and everyone who has helped us to make the library a community resource for all to enjoy!! You are the best!!!

Here’s hoping the weather will behave and we can move on to the actual March Madness we really want to see!! 🏀
