The GCNAACP celebration of Juneteenth was a wonderful success, with beautiful weather, inspiring performances and speakers, and joyful sharing among about 150 people throughout the day.

Many THANKS to so many who made this day a joyful celebration: the spirituals sung by Garrett Choral Society, the stories about long ago local African Americans from historian and curator Karen White of the Garrett County Historical Society Museums inspiring words and exhortations from keynote speaker Carmen Jackson, beautiful interpretive dances from her niece DeeAnn Harper, poetry readings by outstanding local poets The Poet Harmony and Jonathan C. Anderson, African dance lessons from Shawnna Stringfellow and delicious food and drink from The Crazed Lemon and Wholesome Harvest.

A big thank you to our Juneteenth chair Leah Eskew Rigsby who poured her heart and soul into making this event happen .

Today, we celebrate Black freedom.

Juneteenth reminds us of the strength, resilience, and determination of those who came before us and the responsibility we share to continue building a more just future.

May we honor the legacy of our ancestors not only through reflection, but through action — in our work, in our communities, at the polls and beyond.
